Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Visiting the amazing monasteries was incredible. Beyond words in wonder. How the monks managed to build these are incredible feats of engineering.
Definitely spend a day here. It won’t soon be forgotten.

This is truly one of the most amazing things I've seen. The building of such structures on top of those rocks are breath taking. The monestary interior frascos are truly unique. A must see!

The monasteries in meteora are beautiful. I was fortunate enough to propose to my partner with them in the background, which just made our engagement that much more sweeter.
A great place to visit with couples and or as a family.
The monasteries stories and the experience obtained is amazing.

They have great spots where you can view sunsets from and definitely one of the better sunsets you can see in your life with beautiful monasteries in sunset providing for a postcard pic.

It is recommended to carry lots of water and some snack bars as it gets very tiring and exhausting visiting the monasteries, especially if you are doing multiples in a day.

Definitely a place to have on your bucket list.

Exceptional experience and a must for anyone travelling in the area. Some monasteries are easier to visit than others as the climb is easier. It’s a shame that some people are not respectful and try to take photos inside the monasteries and/ or do not dress appropriately.

I can't do justice with words to the incredible monasteries of this region. Plan to be awestruck for a day or two. The Monastery of St. Nicklaus is the lesser travelled but best little find on our journey. Be prepared to climb stairs.

Going to Meteora ? Few tips to make your trip more enjoyable

We just a perfect two day stay in this amazing place. We took the train from Athens - Larissa station at 7:20 am and arrived around 11:30. From there it’s a quick taxi ride to your hotel or the monasteries. We decided to spend 2 night to really get a feeling of the place and not rush.

Our Taxi driver Thimios was so nice that we decided to organize a private tour with him. It’s usually 20 Euros per hour and we totally recommend it. It gets hot in Meteora so it’s worth having someone who knows the place so you don’t waste time and energy walking blindly.

If you want to contact him you can do it by phone or e-mail. He knows the perfect spots for pictures and will pick the best monasteries for you.

Meteora is fascinating. The monasteries on a high cliff are breathtaking. Our tour guide explained how the monks and hermits lived. We toured the region in an air conditioned bus stopping at the sites for pictures and site seeing I highly recommend this tour.

Since we usually have some part of our seaside vacations in Greece, for us it's a very good tradition to visit this area because we are Orthodox Christians, firstly, and since the very atmosphere, freshness of air, perception of freedom and the very views are so impressive to be described that it's necessary to feel them all at site, secondly.

Better to plan your visit by some rented car if you wish some real independence from any group, be there before the very opening and to visit as many monasteries as you want.
We started our trip there from Neoi Poroi at some about 6.00 a.m.; roads are very good and almost empty within these hours and therefore, at 7.30 we had our short rest at the gas station when monasteries were on our horizon :).
This gas station ERIV (will be at the same side of the highway you'll follow) is very suited for this :) - nice veranda for grabbing coffee, very amicable owner Greek-Italian or Italian-Greek makes it very tasty :) and prices for the very gasoline are good.
After refilling your car just in 20-25 minutes you'll be over that famous touristic sight plate where without any interference you'll have as much time as you wish to admire the whole valley beneath, the rocks around and monasteries over them - so nice to be there when there is none of any group tourists :).

Then continue your way to Great Meteoro as the farthest monastery in your route and from there it's better to start your acquaintance with them.
We had visited three monasteries (Meteoro, Varlaam and Roussanou) and thus, this consequence confirmed to be the most logic :) - and when the majority of all groups just begin to overcrowd the area you'll already be at Roussanou after patient, calming and non-packed visits to all planned places including the museum at Varlaam and souvenir shops in all three.
Summing up, the very place is very inspiring for life and really boosts everyday moods :).
At noon following these itinerary and schedule you'll be free to start your way back to the seaside :).
