Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Spent a week there in April and it was a truly wonderful experience. It was our second visit to this region (we first travelled there last year and didn't have much time, so we wanted to come back and spend more time there). The landscape is very impressive, great for hiking. We saw many rare animals such as hoopoes, vultures and various eagles (there are lynx too, but they're shy and we didn't see any). Bring binoculars!
Spring is a great time to visit as it gets very hot in the summer and temperatures in April are moderate. What is more, there are wild flowers everywhere in spring.
There obviously is tourism in the Park, but it was not crowded at all during our time there.
Mertola is a good base to explore the area, the town itself is quiet and very pretty.

My wife and I stumbled across this beautiful old town and castle while on a day trip. The castle originated in roman times and was eventually developed by the Moors before returning to Portuguese rule. What is amasing is that you can stand on top of the castle and immediately understand why it was built there. It defends the strategic river access at the top of this tidal point. No-where else in the world would you be able to roam freely (at no cost) over such a historic monument. and the castle is well preserved also when you consider how long it has been standing. The old town remains undisturbed by most of the modern world and you can relax at a pace suitable to the heat of the day.

Guadiana national park is famous for its variety of birdlife. At one point there were 2 eagles and no less than 32 vultures in the air above us. Also bee eaters, orioles, 4 species of lark, Montague's harriers, little bustard and 23 other species.

The tourist office in Mertola has walk leaflets for free. Walks range from 2 to 10 miles and are well signposted However, you will need a car to reach them (apart from one which starts in Mertola).. Wildlife is easy to se especially in Spring.

We walked the GR15 from Mertola. Two walks. One day on one side of the river for about 3hours (6 kms each way, 14kms return trip), then the next day on the other side of the river. Both were superb. The walk along the riverside included some private property (the gate is not locked, just tied with string and easy to open, until 5.30pm when it is padlocked closed.) Both walks were easy walks and although not well marked, at times, you can’t get lost even if you have just a basic map of the route. Happy trekking.

We stumbled across this area by chance. We had chosen a place to stay for the night and decided to go out and explore.
We found some great trails to walk and mountain bike and were fascinated by the eagles. We counted over 40 in the sky several times during our stay.

There are quite a few hikes to do here ranging from 1 to 5 hours. Be sure to bring lots of water and a camera. There are lots of birds and when the sun goes down you can spot rabbits and foxes. The mines are nice as well. Every area has a different look. Check for ticks after!

A charming small riverside village with a little ferry across to Spain and a lovely river beach.
We ate at a new Indian restaurant called Shiva which served excellent food in spotless surroundings. The host was very friendly and added to our experience. We will return.

Hello, will the kids be able to splash about in the water?
Written 18 July 2019
It seems that there are certain places along the river where locals swim. There are also free beaches such as at Sao Domingos, where everyone swims safely (with life guards), but generally rivers can be dangerous due to unseen currents, so if you were to swim in the river, my suggestion would be to go where the locals go or to the beautiful beaches.
E.g. Fluvial Tapada Grande beach

Hi, I am going to this park area on new years day for a wine tasting activity from Luz. Would like to break up the drive with a hike, how do you find this waterfall area?

Hi. We did not go to this part of the park, so I cannot help you there. Enjoy your wine tasting :)

Bom dia,
Estou a pensar ir dar um passeio pela belissima zona do parque natural do vale do guadiana.
Existem disponiveis mapas de percursos pedestres e de carro?
Obrigada

Bom dia!

Written 8 February 2015
O site do Parque Natural do Guadiana-ICNF tem muita informação. Só que está escrito em português. Tem pdf de percursos para imprimir e tudo. Em Mértola, todos sabem indicar o melhor caminho para a cascata. Pode-se ir de carro até lá.
