The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Ikebukuro
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.

A cool location for an aquarium and lots of different animals, both fishes and mamals. We visited in the evening which was nice because we were almost alone there, staff exepted.

We have stopped by the Sunshine Aquarium in Ikubukuro a few times as family & with friends from out of country. The staff are always warm and welcoming to foreigners and try their best to help us in English. While it is not as large as other aquariums, there's always a lot to see making it a great experience for the kids. We can't wait to go back again!

If you’ve been to an aquarium before, and are not with children or close by you may want to skip this. I’ve been to a couple aquariums before and this was not the best. My father and I had a good time however we barely spend 1 hour here. We were in the area so I do not regret going, but would not make the 30-40 minute travel from our hotel just for the aquarium. It was very sad seeing the penguins and seals as their spaces seemed so small. If you are in the area or with children I would say it’s worth the 2200 yen entrance fee.

For travellers there is mostly English translation for the names, however a Mobile phone is needed to scan a QR code for any more English description of the sea life on display.

Sunshine aquarium is very nice. It’s the first time I have seen an aquarium on the top of a building. The location is very convenient in Ikebukuro, about 10 minutes walk from the station on the busy shopping street. The aquarium is well laid out with plenty of space even if there are many people. The ticket is a little pricey but you can spend 2-3 hours walking around. I particularly liked that the aquarium was divided into an inside area and outside area. It was a beautiful day when we visited so it was very nice to sit in the outside area watching the penguins. Very unique, well built aquarium.

Absolutely loved our visit here, the Penguins in the sky is amazing, such a unique and different way to enjoy watching the wonderful penguins swimming around. Highly recommend this place, fantastic shows and great value for money.

This was a fun way to fill in 3 hours and the kids enjoyed. Unfortunately there was no English spoken but on the displays they did have the name of each creature in English along with the brochure on show times. Show times were across the day allowing you to see the seals performing, the penguins, otters and pelicans being fed and fit in walks through the displays.

My kids enjoy the trip. They get to see many fishes and penguin. There was a enormous stingray. The feeding of the Arrowana when they jumped up and eat the bait was beautiful, however the penguin show was spoken in Japanese and we knew nothing out of it.

The indoors part could have more diversity. It is very crowded on weekends.

The outdoors part is interesting. The animals are more active, jumping and swimming very fast. Rain can make this part of the visit less enjoyable.

Well worth a visit. Animals well kept, exhibits are clean and well maintained.
we had an amazing time and got to see some animals we have never seen before/ didn't even know existed! The perfect remedy for jet lag, having only arrived int he country 5 hours earlier.

This is the most amazing aquarium I've experienced. Thanks to Typhoon 21 whilst visiting Tokyo we spent the day inside Sunshine City. This aquarium was top of my list there to visit and my wife and I weren't disappointed, despite being unable to be on the roof watching the penguins etc at feeding time, we simply watched underneath looking upwards at the glass roof, a fascinating experience, especially as the glass was so designed to give the feeling that the penguins were partially submerged above your head. An entertaining day.
