There's always something to do and you never get bored here. It's so bright and full of lights both at day and night. Very close to a major train station - Shinjuku Station. Great people, amazing area.

As research says it's a red light area, certainly doesn't seem like one. There are many eateries and shops for convenience, and nightlife is quite good too. However, maybe not too good for children.

Worth a little of your time to errand there especially at night, the lights are amazing. There are also tons of little eateries. We never felt unsafe and people were nice.

Lots of restaurants are available in this location. Being the red-light district, there are also many other 'attractions' available on top but a visiting foreigner would be well serve to speak some basic Japanese and also be aware of scams.

This place is great for people watching and in close proximity to everything you need. A large police and Yazuka presence at night times. I travelled as a single female, and felt safe both during the day and at night walking around alone.

Garish at night but sedate in the day. We didn't feel unsafe here despite its past. Good representation of food outlets jostling with its seedier neighbours. Cute combination.

Staying in Shinjuku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinjuku
Shinjuku is the commuting capital of Tokyo, and contains the busiest train station in the world. To the west, there's an office district with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office at its center. To the east, there’s a district with long-established department stores, cinemas and theaters. Shinjuku Gyoen is a park originally built as the garden for the Imperial Household. It is quite famous as a venue for cherry-blossom viewing in March and April. In Shinjuku, many restaurants operate all night, and districts such as Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) or Shinjuku Golden Machi have back streets filled with tiny restaurants and bars that reflect each owner’s unique taste and style.
