Neighbourhood: Shibuya / Harajuku / Ebisu
There are countless opportunities to shop in the Shibuya and Harajuku districts, especially in shops that focus on Japan's "Kawaii" culture. The trendiest areas are around Shibuya’s Center district, Harajuku's Takeshita-dori and in Omotesando. If you need to recharge from all the shopping, you can easily refresh yourself in Meiji Jingu or Sasaki Park. In contrast, Ebisu has a more grown up ambiance of calm and cool. At the Museum of Yebisu Beer you can learn about the beer that was responsible for the town’s name, and enjoy dining at the popular noodle shops in the surrounding area.

Let me tell you, if you are in the hot streets of Tokyo, you need a relaxing activity to do IN the air conditioning. This was so fun. You learn a little history about how the writing came to be (which was very interesting). Atsushi is a very good teacher and very patient and he is always willing to help you out and thoroughly teach you the art of calligraphy. This is definitely something you should try when you visit Japan. When I went, there was a young child learning calligraphy too, so don't feel like if you have kids that you shouldn't try this! It is for all ages!

With a zillion things I could do, I chose to spend an afternoon learning Calligraphy. Not only did I get to learn a new skills, but I also got to meet some new friends and learn a little bit of Japanese. The teacher, Miyazaki sensei, was very knowledgable and was able to give us all very valuable and personalised feedback, in both English and Japanese. Highly recommend this class if you have limited time, a limited budget and are looking to immerse yourself to the rich Japanese culture for a couple of hours in a relaxed atmosphere. 5 stars!!

We arrived to the pre-booked class last minute and all sweaty since the Shinjuku studio is a little bit more difficult to find and we packed to our day a bit more than we could manage. But the smell of calligraphy ink, paper and the concentration required to make even the most basic strokes calms you down almost immediately. The teacher is very patient and appreciates even the clumsiest effort with words "very nice". The quality of materials used is very good. You will left with lovely souvenir of handwritten kanji and your luggage smelling amazing after ink. I would recommend to anybody who enjoys art of any kind, or just want to take a calm breath in busy Tokyo. Give it a go, maybe you will fall in love.

This is studio based lesson. The teacher gives you clear directions to get to the studio -not far from Shinjuku station. The teacher - Atsushi Miyazaki is an excellent teacher - encouraging and patient. He is nationally respected. I can fully recommend this for those interested in learning or gaining further experience in Japanese calligraphy.

One of the best classes I've ever taken! Calligraphy in Japan is not only writing kanji - it's a meditative form of abstract art. Atsushi runs classes in two suburbs: Shibuya and Shinjuku. This is no tourist gimmick - it's a real school with local students. Atsushi communicated perfectly by email during the booking process and was dressed immaculately in suit and tie for the class, held in a narrow rectangular room with a long table in the middle. It was interesting just to see all the equipment used: ink, ink container and brush rest, brush, paper weight, paper. There's a quiet seriousness in the room because calligraphy demands concentration. Atsushi hands out comprehensive notes to guide you. First there's painting straight lines, vertical and horizontal, and then very simple kanji. Once you've mastered that, you choose a more complicated kanji to practise. Finally, you're allowed paint it on a gilt-edged card, and then Atsushi applies the square red stamp to indicate the work is finished. The hour and a half simply flew by. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I first went to Miyazaki-san's shodo lesson with my girlfriend as a birthday treat when she came to visit. The lesson is in a quiet peaceful neighbourhood a short walk uphill from Shibuya station, but a million miles away in terms of the atmosphere! If you want to escape the crowds and chaos of Shibuya, I cannot recommend a better way to spend an hour and a half. Our first lesson was really enjoyable - Miyazaki-san is a very patient and encouraging teacher, and at the end of our lesson we left with a great couple of unique souvenirs.
After the first session I went back 4 or 5 times to continue to learn Shodo. The Sunday afternoon sessions were so relaxing, almost like a meditation. Miyazaki-san seems to know instinctively when to leave you to it, and when you need help. Each week I would start with some exercises with the brush to get the technique, and then Miyazaki-san would help choose a kanji for me to try. He would show me how it was done, and then I would spend the rest of the session building up from the basic elements until I could paint the entire kanji reasonably well (in my humble opinion!).
I would highly recommend this to anyone, whether as a once-off unique experience, or as a new hobby for someone living in Japan.

Absolutely awesome! We were looking for something to do indoors due to the weather and saw this school while walking the streets of Shibuya. Miyazaki sensei was very welcoming and we were able to join the class he was in the middle of teaching. We walked away as happy little campers with our very own DIY calligraphy souvenirs!

I have had the great pleasure of joining Miyazaki-Sensei's calligraphy class some time ago and on a number of very memorable and enjoyable occasions. I had never even held a brush in my hand prior to joining his sessions, but was immediately drawn to the ease and relative speed at which the characters filled the blank canvases of calligraphy paper. For me, this calligraphy class represented a very necessary and welcomed respite from the constant motion of Tokyo's city center; ironically and conveniently located less than a ten minute walk from the heart of Shibuya, this school caters to the quiet and simplicity of an almost meditative form of self-expression where repetition and gradual improvements in one's own technique yields a feeling of accomplishment when gazing upon the first and last attempts of the day. Miyazaki-Sensei's careful guidance and precise instructions are suited to each student's particular strengths, level of experience, and desired expression in their individual works. I look forward to the next time I will take part in his calligraphy class!

My girlfriend and I wanted to try our hand at calligraphy and do something a little bit different to all the touristy stuff we had been experiencing in Tokyo.
Atsushi was an excellent teacher, he guided us through how to construct our letters with the correct technique. He was very patient and understanding too. All the materials are provided too.
The location is around a 20 minute walk from Shibuya, so if you are going to visit make sure you double check your route before embarking on the journey. Atsushi is great with replying to emails with any questions too.
Would highly recommend this class for anyone looking to do something different. My girlfriend and I both found the whole experience very therapeutic.

I am left-handed, and in the past, teachers have told me they can't teach me calligraphy writing technique because it is more of a right-handed technique and they don't know how to instruct me to the correct angles and writing flow. Have you/can you instruct left-handers?
Written 19 July 2017
It's possible to do Shodo with a left hand. But a little bit harder. Some of my students are left-handed and they made a nice artwork. Some of them tried to do it with their right hand and did very well even if they are left-handed. More important are fascination and concentration.

I studied calligraphy at university and did well. However, when I visited Japan I was taken by all the various personal writing styles when I looked at the visitors' guest log at an art gallery exhibition. It was so beautiful...not that what I studied didn't have its charm but I remember when we could do what we wanted i chose some Persia or Middle Eastern calligraphic style. I think I liked the idea that I hadn't a clue what it said.
So when I visited Tokyo in 2002 I bought a brush and ink block set, and an artisan water bottle and mixing bowl. At home I bought a huge floppy brush (that looks more like it's for swatting flies in Egypt while among the pyramids) and a practice set for using water to do the characters and then it just dries away and you begin again. This is pretty neat for any creative drawing. Then I got some good looking paint brushes in Southern Italy that are big,and fat (2"-3") cut with conical tips. I think these are for faux finishing or maybe some English trompe l'oeil work.
Would it be good to bring them along on my trip to use or do you have all this stuff? I have this fantasy of standing and painting the character on the floor paper making a wonderful circle ;O Yes?
Written 23 December 2016
Interesting! Feel free to bring your all stuff. But there are all material in my studio. If you want to write a big circle on the large paper on the floor, please reserve a private lesson. Further information in my website.
