I had a free day solo in Tokyo and heard about the hedgehog cafe. As an animal lover I was half expecting to find it offensive and cruel, instead it was something completely different than what would be found in western culture. It was quick and easy to find from the Metro Station. I paid for a 30 minute session which included a vending machine drink. The place is very clean and the staff are pleasant and caring with the animals. They took the time to show proper handling and offered to take photos as I was alone which was very nice. I spent most of my time just observing them, one did have a yawn and a nap in my cupped hands which was very cute. They had toys and exercise wheels that were in use with the ones that needed the exercise. This was a great little experience. 30min is the max you need to spend. I had a quick hold and then just enjoyed looking at them. Staff were very friendly and complimentary drink machine.

I went into this a little hesitant. I didn't really like the idea of an animal cafe because I doubted the animals wanted to be there but I was surprised. The staff was great and the animal's care was put in front of the human wants for cuteness which made me feel better about the whole thing. We spent most of the time just drinking our drinks and looking at them but some people around us were complaining that they weren't doing much. I don't know what people expected they are hedgehogs? I would recommend but I probably wouldn't go back because I still feel uneasy about the whole animal cafe thing but if I reframe it was a way for humans to better get to know animals on their own terms I think it's ok.…
