I truly agree with a previous reviewer that noted that it's a privilege. It really IS a true privilege to get a glimpse of the daily training routine of the sumo wrestlers. I was in Tokyo outside the tournament season, and did not book a private guided tour on time. If not for Arashio Beya, I would have left Japan without observing this amazing part of its culture. Thank you!!!!

We missed the grand tournament by a week and really wanted to see Sumos in action. Looked at a few of tours but they were all fairly pricey, you had to get up super early and stay for the full 3 hour practice. Arashio Beya offers a free viewing window - you simply show up and take a look. The place is pretty small so you are fairly close to the action despite being on the outside of the building. Its completely free and you can stay for a as long or little time as you like.

One of the highlights of my trip trip to Japan. To have the opportunity to see real Sumo practice. Even for those who do not usually see Sumo tournaments on TV, it is amazing to see them live.
Almost every day from 07:30 to 10:00 you can watch them training as hard as you can imagine.
Very close to the Hamacho or Ningyocho metro station.

So happy to accidentally run into this place. I was saddened that I had kids and would not be able to go to a dojo. Or watch the real tournament later in April. I encountered it heading to the subway entrance. Small crowd in quiet street. Easy views and several practice fights with different wrestlers. Worth it if you know the practice times. We went in the morning.

This training stable has windows so you can stand in the street and watch a group of sumo wrestlers train and do practice bouts against one another. Rain or shine, there’s a group standing outside and watching. There’s a sign that says no chatting and no flash photography but they’re nice enough to let you take photos and at the end they’ll step outside and let you get a photo with them. Fun and free experience!

They are there most days when tournaments are not in 7:30 til 10am. It is very near subway. Check the website link.

There will be a crowd of people so yo you can't miss it!
There is a lot of reflection on the glass so photos will not be great!
Some signs block the glass so there isn't much viewing space.
Inside there are people watching so they block the view also.
Don't go expecting to take great photos.

Overall I enjoyed watching it with the crowd as they practised. If you can't watch sumo then this is an easy must do.

GO if you want to see some sumo while on holiday in Japan.
MISS if you are expecting great photos and no crowd.

TOP TIP - if you wait long enough a sumo wrestler may come outside for some air. Have some respect and ask if you can take a photo

If you can't go to a tournament or get inside a stable, this is awesome!! Off the beaten path, our hotel helped give us directions. Must refrain from talking, eating/drinking and using flash photography. Be respectful.

Unfortunately, we were in Tokyo outside of the tournament season and were very keen to see some Sumo wrestling. We looked at various tours to stables, but it was very expensive and while we weren't keen on the idea of just looking through a window we decided to come out and take a look and was really glad we did. The sumo training was great to see, even if behind the glass. It is obviously sweaty, hard work as the glass began to fog up. The wrestlers would pop outside to get cool and didn't seem to mind having their photo taken, but did not wish to be approached. We arrived around 8am and there were a number of tourists but you could still see. When we left around 8.30am more tourists were arriving and it was getting harder to see because of tourists and the fogging of the glass (it was a cold, wet day, so this may not be an issue on warmer days). However, I would suggest to get there no later than 8.30am.

Since sumo matches weren't happening during our few days in Tokyo, we did the next best thing and visited this training stable. As suggested by their website, we had our hotel call the number provided the evening before to make sure the training session was going to happen (it was!), so we wouldn't waste our time getting up early.
We arrived at the stable at 7:30 and there were already other tourists watching outside the building. By the time we left (around 8:15am), there were around 12 other people gathered to watch.
It is very fascinating to watch the sumo wrestlers train. We didn't wait long enough to have any of them come outside but it was a cool morning spent. Definitely recommend if you want to get "close" to sumo wrestlers!

Great experience. Easy to find using on line maps. Nearest metro stations Suitengumae and Ningyocho. You know when you have found the right place when you see the crowd outside. You don't go in but watch through the street level windows. Starts at 7am and lasts till 10am. Sokokurai is the most senior wrestler to practice here.
