About
Wakana teaches you the real Japanese culture such as traditional calligraphy, cooking, Origami, Tsumami-zaiku etc... Wakana is a licensed calligrapher and having over 20 years of experience!! At the calligraphy class, you will write your favorite word with your name in Japanese. Of course, you can take them home as a souvenir:) Udon making class comes with either Calligraphy, Tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette) making or Origami folding class. You make Udon from scratch! While we let Udon dough sit 1-1.5 hours, you'll experience one more Japanese culture. It's located in my local area close to both Akihabara and Ueno:) More cultural classes are available!! Please check my website for more details or just ask me:)

Neighbourhood: Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

This was one of my family's favorite experiences in Japan! We chose the cooking/calligraphy combination class and loved it. The class was held in an apartment and solely my family was in attendance. Our instructor, Wakana, first taught us how to prepare udon noodles from scratch. While we waited for the dough to rest, she taught us about calligraphy and how to write our favorite word. She was extremely friendly and patient, and also taught us many things about Japanese culture. We ended the class by eating the delicious noodles! A really great experience, and the communication was excellent both before and after the class. I highly recommend it!!

Both my 10-year-old daughter and I loved the calligraphy class with Wakana. She’s a patient and knowledgeable teacher. And takes time explaining the calligraphy intricacies to her students especially children. Also the communication before and after ether class was excellent. Thank you Wakana.

Fantastic cooking and calligraphy class. Wakana is amazing! She taught us how to prepare udon noodles from the scratch and write Kanji (Japanese calligraphy). It was fun, educational and a great way to take a break from the busy days in Tokyo ! All family had a great time. Kids (14 and 10) love the whole experience! Highly recommend!!!

My two sons (13 and 10) and my Mother (82) took a Calligraphy class with Wakana, who was amazing! They appreciated learning the history of the various alphabets they would be learning. Wakana used visuals to teach and patiently help each student during the class. Her English is great and she is a wonderful teacher.
My two sons and I also did an Orgami class right after. Once again, Wakana was patient, kind and effective with her teachings.
We loved being in a Japanese home! It was cozy and peaceful:)

We decided to visit this experience as we like to support local business and, of course, meet local people! We opted for the cooking and calligraphy classes which we thoroughly enjoyed. Wakana was an excellent host and teacher, and her calligraphy is beautiful. My husband and I had a lovely 3 hours with her, and would highly recommend it.

It was wonderful to find and have the opportunity to receive the knowledge of the teacher, who's an experienced expert and professional. Right from the start, from reaching out to finding a suitable date and best advices before the lessons, to all the 4 calligraphy lessons that I took, the experience was nothing short of amazing! There's the freedom to adapt the course and express all preferences or concerns. Thank you so so much for this, I will take it forever with me!

We did the noodle making and calligraphy class together. Wakana’s class has a nice relaxed feel like you’ve been invited to a friends house. Got to use the proper ink stone and brush for be calligraphy with severa practices to perfect a set of characters of our choice. Noodle making was hilarious as you get to knead, cut and even stamp on the dough and it was mmmm delicious. Wakana has lots of crafts too in her house for sale. Got a beautiful pair of crane earrings and were cheaper then an adjacent shop. She kindly posted them to my future hotel

It was probably our problem as we were pressed for time and had to leave right after the allotted hour and a half. Maybe if we had had more time we would have been able to practice more and do a better job. But we had to go.
So we left feeling a little frustrated by our lack of ability/ achievement.
We were at Wakana’s when she was in the middle of moving so her place was quite cluttered .There was no sign at the door of the building. Thank goodness for the TA reviewer who had posted a pic of the entrance to the building- we would never have found it without that.
To be fair Wakana did give us a very clear lesson and we learned a lot. But give yourself plenty of time if you want to do justice to this difficult art.

Thank you for the review. It means a lot to me.
About sign, there are only small signs as I want it like a hidden place so that guests feel less touristy.
I mention to everyone to check Google map photo how it looks like but I think it wasn't kind enough. For now, I will take a photo of the building and send to my guests directly so that they can find my building easily!
Thank you for telling me the truth:)
And so sorry that you had to leave before you felt comfortable.
I will make sure to ask everyone if they have limited time!
But, I remember I was about to tell you one or two more practice, then you should've been ready for the last paper!
You guys definitely have improved a lot. So please do not think you were lack of ability.
But yes, that's the Japanese calligraphy. It's not something like you can make it in few hours.
I never made something perfect in my 24 years. My 73 years old teacher as well. But If I have confidence with my calligraphy, that means I will never improve anymore. That means I have more capacity to improve!
That's why, the kanji of Japanese calligraphy is 'writing road'. The road of learning calligraphy never ends.
I think this is very Japanese thought which I like and you felt it!
I think that's why some of repeat guests keep coming back as they know how difficult but fun the Japanese calligraphy is:)
I really wish we had more time until the difficulty you felt turned to fun!!
Thank you again for the review.
I will take advantage of your review and keep trying my best!!
