I wanted to go tour the castle but the tour was sold out because of a tour bus so make reservations if you're desperate to see it. I read that the castle is just ok so I wasn't disappointed. Definitely pay the 2 Euros to go up in the windmill. There's a little video to explain the windmills workings. We had a few questions and the man in the windmill spoke English and explained further. The whole roof can be turned! Amazing!! Is it a trek from Madrid? There were around seven or eight other campers already there. The road up from here is signed for authorised vehicles.... 😉 We walked up to look at the windmills. Easily accessible by car and, unlike any UK equivalents, absolutely free.
Always wanted to see them and on a journey from Santander to the Mediterranean this visit only involved a tiny detour.
Totally lived up to expectation and the windmills look as good when illuminated at night as they do during the day.
Unfortunately I can’t say the same about Conseugra itself. Our hotel was superb but you’ll find better towns to overnight in.

Consuegra’s windmills, together with the castle, are a fabulous sight situated on a hill above the town. Although built for solid economic reasons, the windmills are now inextricably linked to the fictitious character Don Quixote and his fabled travels throughout La Mancha.
Twelve of the original thirteen windmills have been preserved on the hillside, five of which are in full working order. Fortunately, one of them doubles a a small shop for necessary cold drinks etc!
You can drive up to them or you can walk up a few sets of steep stairs from the town centre.

We stopped here on the way from Toledo to Valencia.

I'm still amazed. I hoped to see what Miguel de Cervates saw and I did. The windmills are whimsical. They are just big enough to be seen from mies away and small enough to be examined closely. They were pretty out of my way geographically, but I'm glad I took that drive!

At the last minute we decided to travel to Consuegra from Toledo to see the Windmills of Don Quixote fame. Being without our own transport we headed off to the Toledo bus station which is an easy stroll from Zocodover Square using the escalators to reach the lowest level of the city. We found that Samar coachline offered 3 - 4 buses to and from Consuegra daily at a return cost of approx €10 per person. The bus trip takes about 90 mins each way. (check the samar.es site as a guide to the timetables but beware these seem to change regularly). When you arrive at Consuegra there is a small but helpful tourist information office beside the bus terminal. From there you can get a map and advice on how to get to the windmills (€1.5) and castle (€4.5) should you wish to enter into either but they can be viewed for free. While it is a steep climb us steps to the first windmill it is worth the effort. There is sealed road access to the site which we did not find out about until we arrived at the top of the steps however from what I gleaned should you wish to use the road it is quite a long walk. I did see a white vehicle driving up and down the road and I believe it may cart people to the top but I do not know where it starts from and the tourist office did not mention it. But for an interesting and very scenic visit it is worth the effort.

We took the Samar bus from the South bus station. We thought we could take the 930 bus but in fact this was only available on Sunday. The next bus we could take was 1100. And surprisingly it was necessary to change bus at Toledo. This wasn't difficult as the bus driver was very friendly and showed us which bus to change.
Arriving at Consuegra bus stop it was already around 2pm. There was a Tourist Office right next to the bus stop (apparently this wasn't mentioned by other travelers review). We took a map and the staff told us how to walk up the hill to see the windmills. It was not difficult and it took us around 20-30minutes to walk up (mind you there was a very long stretch of stairs up). The first windmill we saw was one with a small shop and was open for tourist to climb up inside. Nothing very impressive inside.
Along the hill there are 12-13 windmills. A stroll along them took us around 2-2.5 hours. We were taking lots and lots of pictures - otherwise for the ordinary tourist it might only take 30-45minutes. By the way we were really lucky because the weather was just right: not cold, not warm and not too windy. So comfortable.
As we need to catch the 1755 bus back to Madrid we hurried down back the original way, in just around 20minutes - cool!
The return bus was to be taken at exactly the same spot as we arrived.
We did enjoyed the day trip, though it did take quite a lot of travel time.

The Windmills look great all in a row.
You can go inside them and have a look.
We walked from the town which was quite a upward hill walk and took about 15 minutes to the first Windmill where you have to get a ticket and this also lets you look Inside the castle. It costs 5.50 euro per adult.
After getting the tickets you walk a further 15 minutes uphill to see the rest of the Windmills. It can get very windy and cold when you get to the last one.
You can also take your car if you cannot walk the distance. Well worth the visit.

Driving across Spain and decided to have a few hours in Consuegra specially to see the windmills up close, having passed at a distance several times. Consuegra is well worth an overnight stop over and we will return soon. The windmills and castle have a stunning location with excellent panoramic views across the plains to the hills.
The castle is part way through a renovation and will be even better when completed. The windmills are superb. One is a working mill for show with a video presentation in English and lots of multi-lingual info boards.
Another is a shop and one is the tourist office/ visitor centre. All can be visited for a few euros. You will need to check the opening hours.
Thank goodness you can drive right up to and along the ridge.
Several eateries and hotels in the town below.

If you are staying in Toledo or Madrid, it is worth the trip to check out the windmills in Consuegra. Consuegra is home to the famous windmills that supposedly inspired Miguel de Cervantes (the author of Don Quixote). There isn't much else in the town, so I recommend only spending a little time there.

Yes there are washrooms outside the entrance to the castle on the hill right by the windmills.

Hola, en la zona y los alrededores si pero creo que dentro del Molino tengo mis dudas, por higiene y además que es un sitio muy muy pequeño, puede haber gente que les moleste o tenga alergia

Se pueden hacer visitas a los molinos y castillo entre semana aunque no se con Guia? O es necesario un guía y solo los fines de semana?

Hi!
I am going to Toledo next month and was wondering if it is possible to take a bus from there to Consuegra and back? I do not have a license so I can't rent a car, and booking tours is too expensive, so public transport is the only option for me.
I have done some research and found mixed information. I looked up Samar bus company and at first it looked like there was a Toledo-Consuegra connection but as I proceeded to book the tickets it changed. So my question is, does the Samar bus drive from Toledo to Consuegra or is there another company?

Read posts on the windmills & was wondering if you can tell me how easy it is to get to if you don't have a car? We'll be in Toledo for a night or 2 and are debating about taking a trip out to see them. Thanks for your help.

There is a very charming restaurant with lovely terrace/garden called El Cardenal which I would recommend very much for the site and the traditional Mancha cuisine. For a visit of the town or the windmills, I thought you could try the service of evaneos who offer tours "à la carte" with guides and drivers. I used it is Latin America and was very pleased by this solution offering transport and expert advises.
