Although well signposted from the road, there is nothing to tell you when you are actually there. I continued up an increasing narrow and rocky track to reach a dead end and had to do a three-point turn on the side of a steep hill (not recommended). Take my advice and leave the car near where the houses stop and walk the last bit.
The trail round the various sites is reasonably well marked but requires an act of faith as it does take you scrambling over the rock. Flip flops are not recommended and you'll need to be reasonably mobile. The caves are very atmospheric but quite exposed so you'll also need a head for heights. Kids will love it, but it's probably best visited late in the day when you're alone and can enjoy the views in peace.

Having visited several other similar ancient Guanche sites, this must rank as one of the best! My husband and I visited the site, close to the summit of a very windy hill, Montana de Cuatro Puertas, (part of the otherwise vanished rim of a volcano) on the morning of our departure from the island as it is very close to the airport. Cuatro Puertas (translated as Four Doors) was a major religious site used by the indigenous people of northeastern Gran Canaria. The name derives from four cave openings which lead into a single large chamber, carved into the rock face. A large open space in front is thought to have been ceremonial in nature. We followed the stepped path up to the four cave openings and then decided to follow the perimeter fence before leaving the site - just as well, as there were a great many more caves to visit and explore! Unfortunately some were just too dangerous to attempt to access because of recent rock falls barring the way. There were only a couple of other people visiting and, surprisingly, entry was free and unsupervised! There is however great potential for accidents when scrambling up and over the rocks and scree, especially after rain, so a certain level of agility and care is needed. Also the wind was so forceful and gusting that morning that we had trouble keeping our balance on the very summit! However, the 360o panoramic view from the summit is spectacular and that alone warrants the short steep hike up to the site. It was a very fulfilling experience and it is well worth putting this little-advertised gem on your touring itinerary!

The megalithic place of Cuatro Puertas (literally four doors, in English due to the most important part is a cave with four entrances) is located in the west part of the island of Gran Canaria. It is one of the most important megalithic places in the island as La Cueva Pintada (the paint cave, in English) and El Cenobio de Valerón. Here you can see the cave with four entrances and if you walk 10 minutes more you can see a cliff, where there are a lot of curious caves and from here you can see very beautiful views of surroundings. Very recommendable for stonelovers!

Telde has a large number of archeological remains which dates back million years. We visited Cuatro Puertas, which consists of a series of dwelling caves. There is also an artificial construction cave house (available for rent), which showcases self sustainability in terms of energy and way of living. La Montaña de las Cuatro Puertas is a complex cave, inhabited by natives ages back. The cave also oversees grand view of Telde with mountainous village which presumes picturesque.

If you don’t care about archeology, this place probably don’t give you much. But if you love archeology, history and old, this is great place. There are caves and structures both sides of the hilltop, and also the views for surrounding landscape is great.

Not a popular attraction in GC, but it should be. You have this unique place where one one side you have the Cuatro Puertas (4 doors) which are man made caves, and on the other side some natural and man made caves. Very cool place worth stopping.

This is a hilltop set of cave dwellings located near Telde in Gran Canaria.
We took a guided tour from www.caneducam.com who provided a physical guide (a very knowledgeable guide, but with limited English) and an audioguide, which had been professionally recorded and which gave us just the right amount of information. There are many more cave dwellings than is at first apparent, and our guide showed us the "safest" (i.e. least likely to be lethal) route across the rocks to get to them. The oldest member of our group is in his mid-seventies and he managed the scramble, going slowly and carefully.
The views, the quality of information, and the insight into life in the Canaries before the Spanish invasion in the 15th century was priceless.
For history and culture buffs, this is a brilliant visit.

Had a trouble finding that place to begin with. It was a bit smaller than expected. (Well, I mean where we can see.)
Interesting archeological site. An eye opener to Gran Canaria’s cave history.
But you need to make sure you have correct foot wear. It’s not good for people with walking difficulties.

This is an extensive complex of caves carved out of a sacred mountain by pre-Hispanic Canarians. The caves are free to visit. There isn’t much to see, but the caves are atmospheric and represent an interesting piece of local history. Also, there are some lovely views. There is no museum and I recommend you do some advance research or visit with a guide to give you a better understanding and appreciation of the site. In some of the caves, there are remnants of cooking fires, wall storage spaces, and stone seats/beds. The doors would have been covered with pelts or vegetal cloths. More recently, some of the caves have been used by local shepherds to house their flocks. The main cave can be reached by a short flight of steps. It takes its name from the Four Doors (orientated to observe the summer solstice), behind which there is one large chamber. Most archaeologists believe that this was a ritual place presided over by priests and daughters of the local nobles. The rest of the caves are accessed via stony paths and a bit of a scramble over the rocks - there are no handrails or safety barriers. You need to be reasonably fit and go carefully. Above the Four Doors cave there is a Ritual Cave where offerings were made to the gods. A separate path leads to the Paper Cave which is engraved with triangles and is thought to have been used as part of fertility rituals. The drawings in the Pillars’ Cave were actually made in 1954 when it was used as a film set. The ‘path’ continues to the Audience Cave (formerly sleeping quarters, kitchens, and a granary) and then to a grindstone quarry.

AlbertSalichs description says this is on west side of island, but according to my map it is on the east side of the island, not so far from Telde....?

Hi,
this looks as a great place to visit. I am going to visit G.C. in next few weeks and tried to find more about this place on their web but no succes so decided to ask you. Do they only allow visitors who booked via email or can you just go there and visit the caves? They even do not have any opening hours on the web and it takes some time to get there from Maspalomas.
thank you in advance
sincerely
Juhele
