Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

On the first journey in Spain from my Camino de Santiago from Porto, I went to visit the famous Cathedral of Tui. It is a beautiful cathedral surrounded by peace. It is one of the things that surprised me most, the tranquillity that was breathed in the cathedral. The imposing Cathedral of Tuy is known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria, whose construction began at the end of the 11th century. Located in the upper part of the old town. The initial style of the cathedral is Romanesque whose influence would extend to the entire region of the Minho, both Galician and Portuguese. Do not forget that this beautiful cathedral is located right on the border between Galicia and Portugal. The Romanesque capitals provide decorative wealth with plant elements and also animals (lions) monsters, harpies, etc. An important Romanesque example is the Chapter House, which is considered the largest chapter house of the cathedrals in Spain. It was not until the end of the 12th century that it would be completed in Gothic style, mainly in its longitudinal nave and vaults.

We started our Camino to Santiago de Compostela from Tui.
The town itself has little to commend it and looks to have been hard hit by the recession. However, the area around the Cathederal has a number of nice bars and restaurants and, without exception, the locals were smiley, helpful and seemed genuinely glad to see you. There does seem to be a respect for pilgrims (peregrino's) which seems to be more than an appreciation for the Euros they bring.
The Cathederal itself is a magnificent and fortress like structure and the interiors are similarly impressive. I was particularly taken with the front doors of the church and its magnificent carvings. To the amateur observer the door could do with some tender loving care, whether that be a treatment of olive oil or whatever, so that its magnificent carvings can be preserved for another few hundred years. The stone masonry around the front door is also impressive. See pictures below.
The Cathederal was the starting point for our Camino so if that is your reason for being in Tui you will see it. If you are in Tui for any other reason make it your business to see it - there is very little else to see in the town.

We arrived at the end of a long day’s walking. The cathedral was beautifully cool and peaceful. The audio guides were very informative, particularly with the comparisons to the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela.
The cloisters were lovely and calming and the views from the rooftop were just spectacular.

I've seen many of the great Cathedrals of Europe and this is gem. By European Cathedral standards this is small, but not to be missed. The exterior is simple by the interior is breathtakingly beautiful. Not to be missed! Visit the Cloister and climb to the roof for a view back to Portugal

The Tui Cathedral is definitely worth visiting. Nearly 1000 years old, the Tui Cathedral has withstood time! It’s Romanesque style dominates the medieval center. It was one of the highlights of our time in Tui.

A nice cathedral across the border in Spain, a good 30 minute walk from Valenca but enjoyable once you have gone through the outskirts of Tui, The town becomes another world and the Cathedral has guided voice tours to take at your own pace, 4 Euros each to visit

This Cathedral is full of legends. From the lost passage of Doña Urraca (who allegedly escaped to Portugal through a passage that went from the Cathedral to Valença under the river Miño) to the students that were victims of a haunting ghost. Legends aside, the Cathedral has made its mark because of its unique architecture, its Templar mark, its beautiful contrast of different period of history and...quite honest...the hospitality of its workers there. Make sure you ask for a tour, they'll tell you all the stories.

Dating back to 1120AD, this Romanesque and Gothic structure is worth a visit. There is a most impressive portco that greets the visitor. The interior of the chapel is dedicated to St. James 'the Moor Slayer' and there is an interesting statue honoring the first black saint from Africa. Be sure to visit the attractive medieval cloister. Off the steps behind the cloister is a tranquil garden that overlooks the Rio Minho and the rooftops of old town Tui. Note the hours of the cloister and garden before you visit and prepare to spend a good 1/2 hour visiting.

3 Euro on entering gets you a recorded tour of the cathedral in the language of your choice, very informative and such an improvement on Porto cathedral which is in desperate need of restoration

We need to pay 5€ to visit the cathedral, it's not even to visit the towers or the roof, just to enter the cathedral and see the altars. It's exploiting the faithfull.

What are the daily and Sunday Mass times at Tui Cathedral?
Written 23 July 2017
Sundays are at 1pm. They usually do 10am during the week but that may have changed in the summer. Also it's very popular to host weddings in the summer on Saturdays.
