Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A fortress built as an impregnable fortress, probably by the Romans and then regularly expanded over the centuries.
The fortress can be visited free of charge and those who are good on their feet can climb the individual rock groups via some of the rather steep steps and look at the whole thing from above, where you also have the opportunity to admire the panoramic view from different sides.
We were there at a time when it was no longer so busy and so the walk up and down was somewhat more leisurely.
But the view alone makes up for any difficulties, although you should also wear appropriate footwear.

During our Danube river cruise, we were brought here. It is located at the slopes of Balkan Mountains. It was originally built by Romans to protect their goods and transport in 3rd century AD. Over the years it has gone through under many different rulers. It is the main tourist attraction of Belogradchik town. We were in a big group of almost 100 people. Some of us found it tough to go on top, so we enjoyed its beauty from down. Worth seeing.

The fortress can be visited for a small entrance fee. It is a fairly extensive complex, so a head for heights is required. It is impressive how the fortress was built between the rock towers. The view over the landscape is also fascinating. There are information boards - also in German - that tell the stories that have been created to explain the shape of the towers. A landscape that you really should visit.

What a view ! This site is truly majestic and magnificent.
We did it as a family with two young children (2 years old and 6 years old). You have to supervise the children but this is done without worries: the walk is very reasonable only some stairs are a little difficult but without being blocking with children.
The site is very well organized and very well preserved. The most beautiful spectacle remains that created by nature around the site: wow!

The detour via Belogradchik was definitely worth it.
We were there for a whole day and there was so much to discover.
The castle complex is properly built into nature and rock formations.
The view is fantastic and the facility itself is very impressive!
An absolute recommendation!

We visited as part of a group tour from a river Danube cruise.

Interesting place to visit with lots of history and folklore arising from the shapes of the rock formations.

Lots of walking involved, some of it quite flat so suitable for most people. I managed to get right to the highest point but needed to take my time. Well worth the walk though for the excellent views from the top if you don't mind a little physical challenge! If you don't want to walk all the way to the top you can stop at the first or second level . Some of our party did this and still enjoyed their day and some of the best photographs are possible from the lower levels.

Very nice day trip to the fortress. Never seen such a good integration of a fortress within the mountains.

Even more astonishing was the view from on top of the fortress/mountain. We did not expect that the view from the back of the fortress would be that great.

My wife and I visited the Belogradchik Fortress on an excursion during a Viking Danube River Cruise. The rock formations are magnificent. We walked all the way to the top to get the commanding views. We took our time and were careful as we went up and as we descended the many steps. It is well worth the effort to get to the top.

Belogradchik means “white construction,” standing for the shining fortress rising above town. One of the best preserved Bulgarian fortress. It is on of Bulgaria’s cultural monuments of national importance.

Belogradchik Fortress is 1 hour drive from Baba Vida Fortress, and 2.5 hours from Sofia. Road quality is ok on some parts and on some not. A couple of road signs are along the way, so generally speaking easy to find.
Entrance is 6 BGN (3 EUR) per person.
Parking is paid 2.4 BGN (1.2 EUR) for 1 hour.
You need to be fit if you want to get to the top. First you have to climb 124 steps, and then some 66 steps more to the top. But the view from the top is AMAZING.
It is worth the Visit!
