We took Trail 1. We decided to begin the hike by riding on the cable car to get a good leg up on the walk.

When we exited the cable car we saw toilets straight ahead - and decided that it would be a good plan to use them not knowing what we’d find along the trail. Because of their location they were quite busy on this Friday in early koyo season. In fact much further along before the final climb to the summit we came upon a two-story building with toilets and drinking water spigots.

We followed the crowds assuming most were choosing Trail 1 also. We had printed maps from Google Maps in case we couldn’t get any others. We were glad to have our own maps since when we did get some they were all in Japanese. We’d suggest printing maps of your own from those you find online.

Even without maps, it would be difficult to miss anything on Trail 1, as you are caught in a stream of people all going before you. It seemed as if half of Tokyo was walking the path with us - also looking for koyo. Tall trees lined the pathway, but there was very little color on the way up, and that mostly dry or burnt out. Glancing through the trees to the several views out over Tokyo was pretty disappointing; it was quite hazy even though the day seemed clear when we began this adventure.

Trail 1 is easy going, not much of a challenge - broad and mostly paved. We did enough research to know to expect little outcroppings of shops and food stalls, plus the Monkey Park in which we had no interest. Our main targets were the Buddhist Reliquary, the Yakuoin Temple, and the summit of Mount Takao. Then we hoped to go on beyond the top of Mount Takao to the nether end of Trail 1, there to get the best views of Fuji and to find a soba stall we had read about.

We managed to follow much of our plan though everything was not quite as we expected and the crowds were indeed massive.

I decided to head out to Mt. Takao instead of spending my final day in Tokyo because I was tired of the crowds, and I'm so glad I did. This mountain, covered in hiking trails, temples, monuments, and shrines, is an easy (and cheap) train ride from Tokyo, and I had a blast. There is so much to see here, with every turn putting you face to face with historical architecture and/or great views. Definitely check it out if you need a break from the crowds (or even if you don't). :)

We chose to take the chairlift up (small charge), then hiked trail 4 to the top. Trail 4 is a wooded footpath, some log-steps, and squidgy if wet. Take hiking boots and poles if you have them, though we saw many in trainers. Some good views east to Tokyo (if clear, you can pick out Shinjuku, Skytree and Yokohama) and south over wooded areas. Quite commercialised here and there especially at the top and round the temples, plenty places to eat etc. We took trail 1 all the way down to the base. Trail 1 is almost 100% concrete, and steep in places. Trail 1 doesn't really count as hiking, to be honest, but you still get the scenery. The mountain was busy at 10am midweek on a fine day, in the koyo (leaf-peeping) season. Expect crowds if you plan to go weekends and bank holidays. About an hour on a fast train from Shinjuku. Use the Takaosanguchi final station on the Keio line, driving here would be tedious and parking difficult.

Its a great place to start for new hikers. 6 trails to choose from. Some are nature trails and some are man-made. We took trail 1 to go up and trail 6 o return. Trail 1 is a concrete trail which snakes through various spots including a temple. Trail 6 is a pure nature trail, which goes through a small stream and is as close to nature as you can get in Tokyo.

Would strongly recommend the Inariyama Trail or Trail 6 — the Biwa Waterfall Trail. The main trail (No. 1) seems to draw the crowds, even parties of school kids....

Takaosan (Mount Takao) is one of the closest natural recreation areas to central Tokyo, offering beautiful scenery, an interesting temple and attractive hiking opportunities. Although outside the city center, the mountain is still located within metropolitan Tokyo and takes only 50 minutes and 390 yen to reach from Shinjuku.

On a clear day, you can see Mt. Fuji - nice viewing option.

Hike is easy and is very popular - place can be too crowded but it is OK.

Better go early in the morning and then you can go down before lunch time. Start 7am or 8am and you can be back by 12noon - assuming you spend 1 hr. at the top.

Just 55 min trip on JR limited express from Shinjuku station to the destination. (Note: Don't take LOCAL train: it will take more than 1.5 hr!) The trails start right at the station and offer a choice from a paved one (for an easier stroll) to the more demanding physically but offering charming view to waterfalls, brooks and great scenery. I took this one and was super happy. There is a great prize at the end of one of the trails: very original, beautiful, ancient buddhist temple... And on the other one there is a beer garden - so choices are there...

Not so challenging but nonetheless excellent place to get fresh air and spend the day outside Tokyo city. However in holiday seasons, it gets quite crowded.
