An hour outside Tokyo by train, Mt. Takao is popular among city dwellers for the views from its seven hiking trails. To enjoy the view without the work, take the cable car or chairlift to the top and visit the Takaosan Yakuoin Yuuki-ji Temple, founded in 744.

Decided to go to Mt. Takao as an option to view Mt. Fuji. It being winter, going to the lakes near Fuji was dropped from the itinerary due to the cold and physical limitations of some members of our little party. Sadly, we did not see Mt. Fuji when we visited. However, it was a very nice hiking trail. Refreshing... More

You can take the cable-car or chairlift to midway of the mountain and continue onto hiking trails from there. During autumn, the queue for the cable-car (not sure about the chairlift) can take more than 45min! Mt Takao is really popular with the locals. I bought the Keio discount package which includes train tickets from Shinjuku, as well as tickets... More

This mountain is located 1 hour by train from Shinjuku. We reached to the mountain trails in 5 minutes by foot from the station. There were nine climbing trails there. No.1 was the easiest and it was paved road to the top. That road was a bit boring for me, but it was easy. Since No. 6 and No. 9... More

This mountain is so beautiful with many ancient temples. The fresh air and the beautiful view from the height of 500 meters will absolutely make you overwhelmed. You can also see Fuji mountain from the top of Takao. Must try in the spring

This is the hiking "bedroom" of Tokyo, about as close as you can get to stretch your legs and be in nature. For a one-day hike, as for as Jimba-san, give Mt. Takao a whirl. You will find the pedestrian access about an hour from Shinjuku Station on the Keio Line to Takao-san Guchi at the end of the line.... More

Its a terrible place to take your family. its a cold mountain, its not even a large mountain and there is a terrible and dangerous chair lift to the top and at the top there is nothing there just a monkey museum WHICH THEY MAKE YOU PAY TO ENTER, and the view was so foggy I couldnt see anything, I... This is one of my most favorite local things to do--it's fabulous in every season. Taking the chair lift is a blast though the cable car is also a nice option. The hikes up are gorgeous and picturesque. The temple is nice. Highly recommend!

We visited Mount Takao I did the trail 1. It was easy using the chair lifts to go up to get the top of the mountain. On the way back we took the trail 4 from the top of the train station. We crossed the suspension bridge and had to cross through the forest... incredible. If you go with kids... More

I hiked today. Took the Inariyama trail up. Some places are steep but not hyper difficult. Today was clear day. Great views of City of Tokyo and Mt. Fuji from the peak. Walked back trail 1. Good for family and young ones. Thoroughly enjoyed came back relaxed and ready to take on the new year!! Train from Sinjuku is super... More

I was in town for work & couldn't get a flight home until Sunday night. I visited Takao-San on the Saturday at the start of Golden Week. Although it was quite busy due to the holidays it was a lovely respite from a hectic week. I thoroughly enjoyed the walk through nature ans my afternoon tea at an inn.
