After a visit to Belgrave’s Trees Adventure, I was looking forward to a similar adrenaline rush at Arthur’s Seat’s Tree Surfing. Tree Surfing, at $59, costs more than Trees Adventure but allows access to most of the other facilities at the Enchanted Maze Garden. These include tube slides, multiple mazes, gardens and picnic facilities. There is also a zip line across the park which is an additional cost. To use the additional facilities, I recommend spending the entire day at the complex. Take a picnic lunch, as the café facilities are the typical overpriced pre-packaged or deep-fried junk found at most tourist traps.

My visit to Tree Surfing was on the Christmas long weekend. I do not recommend this facility on a long weekend. Parking was hopelessly inadequate for the holiday crowd. I, along with many others, ended up parking on the side of the road and walking. The crowds also meant long lines for amenities such as the café and toilets. I arrived an hour before my Tree Surfing booking intending to enjoy a leisurely lunch, but barely had time to gulp down a yoghurt due to all the queuing. The Tree Surfing session itself was overbooked and started late due to the crowds. The staff were very friendly despite all the people, however their directions to the Tree Surfing harnessing area did lead me on a wild goose chase. For the record, the harnessing area is under the café, not out at the course itself. It is a separate area to the sign up desk for the zipline, and not very well signposted.

Once the Tree Surfing session began, we were kitted out with harness and helmet. Gloves were not offered but are available on request – I brought my own (the loan gloves if anything like Trees Adventure would be rather grotty). A staff member then took us out to the course and ran through the safety system, making sure we all tried it out with the two practice obstacles. There is a separate kids course, which runs separate sessions to the adult course.

The adult course is split into five sections, none of which were particularly strenuous to my moderately fit self. The course is made up of a variety of wire, rope and timber bridges and balance obstacles, along with cargo nets and ziplines. The highlight, and point of difference from Trees Adventure, is the tarzan swing into a cargo net on the level five course. This is similar to the obstacle on the Ninja Warrior TV show, except that you climb the net sideways rather than straight up. I enjoyed it so much that I went back and did level five again.

Each level ends with a zipline into a pile of tan bark. Unless you land perfectly on your feet, you are going to end up whacking the tan bark which can be pretty painful as you are hitting it at speed. I missed the landing every time, resulting in much grazing and bruising on my back.

The Tree Surfing course also has a rock climbing wall which was unfortunately out of action during my visit. The course also has its own coffee shop and water fountain which are much appreciated.

After my two-hour session, I had some time to try out the tubeslides in the Enchanted Maze Garden. Waiting until the end of the day meant smaller queues. There are straight and curved slides of varying lengths, with sprinklers down the slides to aid your passage and cool you off in the heat – great after two hours of Tree Surfing. You can ride the slides either solo or double, but you do need to haul your own tube up the hill to the top of the slide each time.

Getting to Tree Surfing from suburban Melbourne is a breeze, as the route to Arthur’s Seat and thence to the Enchanted Maze Garden is well signposted via the Mornington Peninsula Freeway– no maps required. Having a separate parking area for tree surfers as opposed to regular park users would possibly improve the overall experience, along with not overbooking the sessions. Also a reduced price for those who want to tree surf only would be handy considering the competition in Belgrave.

We ended up having a great day out, but it was rather frustrating along the way.
We were ready to start on time, which was fantastic, harnessed up, 10 minutes before our timeslot, along with all the other families doing the Nippers course.
The first course took us just under 15 minutes, and we had a ball.
The second course was not so pleasant. We got stuck behind a family / group of 3 toddlers ( I would guess they were only just 3 years old) and lots of adults. The adults did not seem to know how to help their children to finish the course, so they all just stopped there and did nothing. We arranged for 2 of the Tree Surfing staff to go and help. 45 minutes later, we all managed to finish the course, as the staff cajoled the crying, wailing, shrieking and screaming children to take step by step all the way to the end. It was painful for everyone.
So then our time ended, and we had only managed 2 courses, and we couldn't say it was a fun experience. Except I had a word to the staff, who agreed to let us stay on the course for another turn or two, and we ended up having a ball. The weather was terrific, sun shining through the leaves, and as long as we avoided the course that this other group was doing (yes, they continued doing the courses, until after we had left the area, kids still crying and unhappy!!!), we moved quickly and enjoyably through the course. Unfortunately there is no way to exit the course, once you have clipped on and started, and there is no way to pass someone along the way. (Unlike the Trees Adventure in Belgrave, which allows you to do both, so if someone is injured, they can be taken down, and if people are scared of heights, same thing, and if you are moving more slowly than the person behind you, you simply let the person move ahead of you...courtesy makes for a pleasant day out for everyone).

We took kids aged 12, 15, and 17. Kids and adults loved the tree surfing ropes courses. There are 5 courses and each course ends with a zip line. Each course gets a little harder and higher. You are always strapped on and cannot fall. Our daughter with special needs struggled and the very patient guide Ed climbed up with her and coaxed her through the whole first course. Plenty of other things to do in the park. Mazes, and tube slides. Big rubber tubes down the mountain. There is also a big zip but we skipped it as had enough zip lines on the ropes course. We were there in winter and you do get muddy as it's very hard to stop yourself at the end of the zip line without getting dragged a bit in the dirt. Challenging but all ages could do it including the parents. The ropes course took about 2 hours and you can easily spend another 2 hours in the park. Loved it.

Paid over $200 for 4 kids and 1 adult to do the tree surfing. Then for me to just go watch the kids, I only wanted to stay to supervise, I had to pay another $30!! Very unreasonable to not have it set up so you can supervise your children without having to pay an entry fee to the whole maze,

First of all, I have to say that we love the activities in here, very unique and lots of fun. We paid for a full combo package that includes all the activities. Everything was fine, staff was very friendly. The only thing that bugged us the most, and basically the worst part is the time limit. Apparently we are only allowed 2 hours for the tree surfing, but we had to go after a group of painfully slow Chinese couples who insisted on waiting for each others on the tree platforms. As annoyed as we were, we found out that we could not finish the last 2 levels because we ran out of time, which was not even our faults. So now if we want to finish those last courses, we'll have to pick a day, pay for the pricey tickets and drive all the way from Melbourne down there AGAIN. All because of those rude Chinese students, whom I had to tell not to hanging around waiting for each other. Staff did not tell them off or anything. Very very unfair.

Dear Lexxterie, Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to our Adventure Garden. The Tree Surfing experience is an activity that naturally can attract some hesitation from participants, some people can take more time than others to get through the levels. We apologize that other guests affected your experience, our Tree Surfing instructors do monitor the courses to ensure that other guests are enjoying themselves, but being respectful of others enjoy their experience at their own pace. We hope to welcome you back to Tree Surfing again soon, on your next visit we recommend visiting mid-week as these are quieter days of the week. Kind Regards, Tree Surfing Australia Team

July 2014 • Family
My husband and I took our three girls aged 11, 9 and 6 to try tree surfing in the July school holidays. My husband undertook the Grand course with the two older girls and I signed up for the Nippers course with the youngest. We started off well and my daughter was very excited, until we crossed the first "bridge". It was then that she froze and refused to go any further. No amount of encouragement or reassurance was able to convince her to go on. I had a little 5 year old girl behind me who was on her own and I was very conscious that she was getting anxious waiting there while I tried to convince my daughter to continue. I started to chat to the mother of the little girl who was watching from the ground to see if she could ask for some assistance. She went away to find a staff member. By this time people had caught up to us from the next group. It did seem like a very long time (but probably wasn't more than 5 minutes) before the mum came back and said a staff member would be along soon. I was very grateful to see a team member arrive, as by that time the little girl behind me had started to cry after having to wait so long and fear had set in. Our assistant was wonderful and reassuringly spoke to my daughter and then walked her across. She then came back for the other little girl. We eventually got through the first run with our team member agonisingly having to walk two little girls through each section. It was an awful feeling knowing there is no way to get off once you are on. My daughter loved the flying fox at the end of the run and so she ended on a high note. I did the second run on my own. I think staff should be a bit more aware of how a group are going, as it did feel that once you were latched on and sent off, that you were on your own. Given the Nippers course was geared to younger children, I am sure it must happen that children do panic and need assistance and it was frustrating having to send out a scout to call for assistance. But for the mother of the other little girl on the ground I wonder how long we would have waited before someone came to assist us. My husband and the other children thought the Grand course was fantastic. We enjoyed the tube slides and the mazes, but the highlight was definitely the tree surfing.

Our daughter and her friends visited here twice this week. They enjoyed it both times.

Positive:

1. Helpful and busy staff. All the staff who we spoke with were helpful and proficient.

2. Everyone enjoyed the tree surfing.

3. Good value for money.

Negative:

1. The food at the cafe is over-priced and not that great. The chips were popular with the girls, but the sandwiches on both days were mediocre.

2. Difficult to find shaded areas to sit while waiting for the kids.

Overall, I recommend it. We’ll definitely go again.

Thanks for your recent review! It's great to hear your family are return guests. If you are considering visiting us again soon, we recommended asking our staff about an annual membership, it could work out more cost effective for you! It's fantastic to see that our staff are at the top of your positive list, we will be sure to pass your feedback on to them. Perhaps next visit you could try bringing a picnic. We look foward to welcoming you back again soon. Warm Regards, The Enchanted Adventure Garden Team

We love this place, you need to put a day aside for it. You'll be in there for at least 4 hours, and you'll come out exhausted. Beautiful gardens, and fun tree surfing, for both younger kids and grown ups. The younger tree surfing experiences finish with a wee flying fox/mini zip, and the bigger kids (over 135cm) can choose to do the huge zips across the park, plus the bigger tree surfing experiences. Also heaps of different mazes scattered around the park, and interesting sculptures, and a fun tube slide. Its not cheap, but its worth the price.

Thank you for your review following your recent visit. It’s great to hear that you had such a great time! We agree that its best to put aside either a half or full day when visiting us. For any future visitors we would suggest allowing 2-3 hours for the general admission activities, 1-2 hours for Tree Surfing (depending on the course) and an additional 30 minutes for the Big Zip. By the time you pack a picnic or have some lunch as well, the time flies! For a full day out our pricing is comparable to other adventure based activities in the area and for those looking to spend less we can recommend our general admission tickets. Hopefully we can welcome you again soon! Warm Regards, The Enchanted Adventure Garden Team

We absolutely loved the tree surfing adventure. It was incredibly difficult and we did not leave without our fair share of bruises, however you definitely feel safe the whole time. The staff takes this place to the highest level. Every staff member was friendly, helpful, and seemed to be really excited to have you their trying their tree surfing adventure. The gardens and surrounds are also stunning and I would rate the overall experience 5 stars any day of the week!

A thoroughly enjoyable adventure for the whole family!

The drive up the mountain to get there requires your focus and adherence to the recommended speed limits - there's some tight turns and bikes to be on the look out for. Spectacular views of the water abound - check them out at the designated view points on the way down.

Bypass the first entrance sign and go about 60 metres past it and park at the second (main) entrance if your going tree surfing otherwise the trek back to your car is long and you have to use the road to get back to the first carpark if you exit from the main entrance (which is where you drop your gear off) which if you have kids (or tired adults) I'd not recommend doing.

Tree surfing was awesome and definitely challenging - you MUST book prior to arrival, it's time allocated and hard to secure a slot for same day otherwise. As with any other entertainment venue - school holidays and weekends get very packed. Waiting times in between challenges can be up to 15 minutes as you need to wait for the person in front to complete before you can commence.

Don't miss the 3D maze - was amazing!!

The gardens throughout were delightfully beautiful and tranquil whilst the mind maze challenges, canopy walk and tube slides were great fun.

There's something for all age groups here so no one gets bored.
There's ample seating around and plenty of grass space for a picnic

Things we noticed:

Take a coat if your there for an afternoon session - when the sun begins setting it gets cold quick. Especially if your standing / sitting waiting for people surfing.

Not a great place to be in Winter - believe it would be very muddy and slippery.

Don't wear 'Your Sunday best' to surf - you will get dirty. Shorts mean bark 'could' possibly end up where it shouldn't.

Overall we loved it and will be back with More family and friends to relive and create more laughs and memories
