The painted floats that they carry in festivals were incredible to see, and they surround you in the first room, where traditional drumming takes place. There is a demonstration, and volunteers are asked to play with them - and I did, and it was fantastic. I'm a 67 year old woman, and drumming is not my game, but it was... More

Visiting Kuroishi for a nearby mid-summer crafts fair, I enjoyed stopping at the town's kokeshi museum and shopping arcade. The kokeshi shop offered a choice of several hundred different artisan-made forms and figures, some of which seemed inspired and special. Knowing my mom has old family pieces I refrained from buying~! I did pick up a few gifts. I had to buy another suitcase... More

Spent a morning here in late August - it was sweltering but this was a great place nonetheless! We participated in a workshop to paint our own kokeshi dolls, it was a lot of fun. The instructor told us a bit about the different traditional designs and then we painted our dolls however we chose. My two-year-old daughter was upset... More
