About
Amba Estate is an organic farm in the Uva Highlands of Sri Lanka. The farm is about 30 minutes drive from Ella, perched in a small valley above the Ravana-Ella Waterfalls, with views of Ella Rock and Lipton Seat. We produce a range of artisanal teas, coffees, spices and preserves, and we work with the local community to support a variety of educational, economic and environmental projects. We offer guests the opportunity to stay in one of the old Estate bungalows, learn more about artisanal tea-making, and enjoy our little corner of paradise. We offer tours of the farm and artisanal tea and coffee production every day at 11am. The tour is free, and you can also do a tea tasting after the tour for Rs.600 per person. No need to book ahead – just turn up.

Very insightful tour, beautiful area
May 2020 • Friends
My friends and I went to Amba Estates and got a tour of the tea plantation. We learned all about the process of making tea and even cinnamon. The staff seemed to really enjoy what they do and are very knowledgeable. The tea tasting was interesting. The estate is gorgeous with scenic views. The lunch was very delicious and the dogs and baby kittens were precious. Thank you to Cindy and Simon and everyone at Amba for a great visit! Looking forward to visiting again soon!

Relaxing stay in beautiful surroundings
Feb. 2020
This place is magic. The surrounding countryside is beautiful with short walks available around the estate. It's worth waking up early in the morning and walking up the hill to see the sun rise. Breakfast and Dinner each day are vegetarian and very tasty even if you aren't a veggie. The local doggies will often sunbath in the gardens and add to the general feeling of relaxation. The staff are all very polite and helpful. Our room had an excellent view from the balcony and it was good to sit and read a book. The rooms are clean. The tea tour is excellent and I now know more about tea than I ever thought possible.

Beautiful place doing important work on sustainability. Such a brilliant day!
Mar. 2020
We had a private tour of the Amba estate so really got to understand the story behind the place and how different their approach is. It's an organic farm, making hand rolled tea and the staff have a profit share as well as their wages. I loved how all the women there have learned to use spreadsheets so they are now gathering data on the tea growing and making process. Really understood the 'art' of tea for the first time. Then we had a tea tasting and after this had lunch in the garden which was completely delicious and full of fresh vegetables from their land. A guide then took us on a walk down to the river and I swam in the most beautiful waterfall pools. We'd been to Ravana falls just outside Ella the day before which was nice but crowded with tourists, whereas here we had the whole place to ourselves and met lots of locals on the path along the way. This was one of my favourite days of our whole Sri Lanka trip and as a bonus the gift shop is also great- we bought presents for everyone back home here and as well as the tea you can buy things the women who work at Amba have made in their own time. There's even a women's chutney and jam making collective! Definitely worth a visit.

Excellent tea tasting and tour
Feb. 2020 • Couples
If you are looking for a unique tea tour and tasting this is the place. So different to the larger tea plantations - this was all about organic tea with quality over quantity. There are free tours at 11am every day and then a tasting session for a cost (I think 600LKR). However, we came later on for a delicious lunch in the gardens and then had a private tour of the grounds , factory and tea tasting session (about 2-3 hours in all ). This was around 3500LKR PP. It was so interesting learning about the origins of the tea and I also the unique blending process. The chief tea blender gave us the tour and he was passionate about what he does and very informative. The location is beautiful and also is a guesthouse. We even purchased some tea and some passion fruit jam to enjoy at home. Thank you so much AMBA estates!

Best tea tasting and hikes
Feb. 2020 • Couples
Did not sleep or eat here, but came to have the tea tour because this is a manual tea 'factory'. Very in depth explanation (maybe a bit too much, took nearly 2 hours, tour is free of charge) and after the best tea tasting we experienced. We had 8 tastings (and 2 marmelades), for 500 roepies you can participate, it is optional. We bought the finest tea!
You can also barrow a map to go hiking in the area, far more beautiful and desserted walks compared to little adams peak e.o.

Tea tour at Amba Estate
Jan. 2020 • Couples
After several tea tours at other factories we had one at Amba. Instead of a 15 min story we got a 2 hour tour incl tasting. We have learned things about tea we did not know.
A must do when you are in Ella. The tuktuk tour will bring you in 30 to 40 min to the estate, where the most friendly staff is waiting for you!
I would say, just go for it.

Tea field tour, sunrise hikes, food, tea tasting, tour around historic sites.
Dec. 2019 • Friends
We just spent three nights at Amba Estates Tea Farm/B&B and were thoroughly enchanted and pleased. The people are incredibly friendly from staff, to owners, to guides. We enjoyed wonderful Sri Lankan meals, great hikes including one at sunrise, and an informative tour of the tea, coffee, clove, and cinnamon fields which ended with a tea tasting. We happened to be there over Christmas and loved the kids Christmas pageant. Would love to go back!!!

Amazing tea and tour
Oct. 2019 • Couples
We were recommended this by a friend and was such a good recommendation. It is down a very narrow road 20 mins outside Ella. We did the free tour at 11am which was great all about the history of tea in Sri Lanka and how the industry has changed and where the future of tea is going for Sri Lanka. We had a walk around the estate and great views over the valley and of ella rock. And at out of the tea making equipment. We then did the tea tasting which was Rs500 and well worth it particularly after doing the tour as could taste the different teas you had learnt about. All in all a great place to visit.

Organic tea plantation doing amazing things
Sep. 2019
We took a tour of the estate as recommended by Waterfall Homestay, we were particularly swayed after sampling their jam at breakfast!
The tour was informative reagrding the history of tea in Sri Lanka as well as interesting after we learned about the process of tea production.
The views from the plantation were lovely and sampling the various teas produced was fun!
It was great to hear the business is ethically run with staff part of the partnership.
We bought lots of lovely tea and jam for presents to take home!
