We were staying at the nearby El Silencio. The walk down to the waterfall is mainly by steps put in by the owners family a few years back. A fantastic achievement. Although steep, the climb is not difficult and the view is spectacular: not to be missed. On the way back don't miss the garden loop, more great views, birds and... More

This is a waterfall worth seeing. It's place in the canyon makes it spectacular to view from the top or from the bottom. The hike down and back up is rather intense. But if you take it slow, it's not a big deal. On a rainy day, it might be challenging as the mud is slick. We lucked out to... More

You need to go to this location and descend to the base of the waterfall, it is astonishing and unique. The ascent is a little bit demanding, around 30-40 minutes, but the experience is nice. Also the paths are well maintained, not excellent, but good enough considering the wet conditions of the area. Finally, consider they close on Sunday, the... More

The aerial view of Cataratas del Toro is so wonderful that angels must have gazed down on it in flight.

Roads from Zarcero or from Sarapiqui are in better conditions. From Alajuela I only recommend a good engine car because of the hills. Everybody could admire the waterfall from above, just a 5 minutes walk and it worthy. If you have a very good condition, do down, its amazing!!! Just remember that then you have to go up 350 steps... The Hummingbird Garden at the beginning meeting house was amazing; so many different sizes and colors of hummingbirds! The tropical gardens and pathways at the start of the hike to the waterfall are so beautiful. Saw some howler monkeys high in the trees at one spot! There are at least 400 steep steps down to the bottom of the waterfall... More

The owner who is Dutch was very professional and looked after us so well. He made us dinner and breakfast because we got in at 5:30pm. It is a challenge getting up to this waterfall, but wow....it is gorgeous. We drove and the hills to get there were steep. It was worth the drive. And the grounds around the hotel... More

I was astounded by the size of this waterfall. The setting is absolutely stunning as well. We arrived late, due to crap roads, but Will (the caretaker/owner) was very accommodating and allowed us to go check it out with headlamps. I have seen many waterfalls in Costa Rica, but this one takes the cake! Don't miss out!

We were happy to discover this waterfall, it proved to be one of the most beautiful places we've seen on our trip to CR. Catarata del Toro is the highest waterfall in CR with a 90m drop. It has a multicolored cliff for background and is surrounded by rich shades of green of the moss and tropical forest plants. The... More

In my opinion, this is the most beautiful waterfall we visited in Costa Rica. I almost don’t want to write about it because it’s a bit of a hidden gem and so far not touristy, and it would be great if it stayed that way. We had the whole hike and waterfall to ourselves the whole time we were there.... More
