Been doing it for 25 years.
I should start by mentioning that I have taken the Catalina Express boats frequently for the last 25 years or so (I dive on the Island). Things have changed. While there used to be a bar and a deli shop in the terminal, the bar disappeared, then the deli disappeared, and all we're left with now are sad vending machines and, sometimes, a food truck. Ticket changes used to be free: now they cost 5$, and I bet you the price will increase soon. Technology has also invaded the parking, and now the reservation system: make sure you bring your smart phone, or you're dead! In short, what used to be a friendly, casual operation has become more like flying. That's progress. But all this being said, the boats remain clean and efficient, the crews professional and kind, and the rides wonderful - with a bit of luck you'll spot dolphins and whales, and, even with rough seas, things won't get too shaky (if they are, the crew will hand out plastic bags for you:). Going to Catalina is a sure bet, and taking the Express is entirely part of the experience.

    Great experience
My husband and I used Catalina Express to get from Long Beach to Avalon just last week. And due to flight issues, we missed the first boat and got new tickets for a later boat. After arriving to the Catalina Express launch site and after describing what happened, CHRISTIAN, did a great job in helping us get a tickets and made it the whole process very easy. I hope he is recognized by his superiors.

    Catalina Express Weathers the Storm!
This is the third time we. Have taken this from Long Beach to Avalon and return. I really applaudthe customer service team. They worked hard to keep us posted on the schedule during a recent storm. We were fortunate to be able to change our ticket and get on an earlier ferry because I understand there were cancelations due to the weather for the later ferries. We will always use Catalina Express. When going to Catalina Island. The Commodore lounge is worth the extra price!

Santa Catalina is the place to be...
The trip to Catalina was fun. When we got to the island we rented a golf cart for 2 hours and toured the mountain top. The views are breathtaking. Lots of shops and fun things to see on the island. We left at 5 in the evening and saw the most beautiful sunset ever. Catalina Island is a must see. We left out of Dana Point on the Catalina Express, nice boat.

A Smooth Crossing to and from Catalina
Smooth snd easy trips to and from Catalina Island from Dana Point. Spacious and comfortable boats. Good light snacks and drinks. Attentive, friendly and kind crew. Highlight was seeing pods of hundreds of dolphins near the Island. They slowed down the boat for safety and viewing. Amazing!

    Excellent trip!
A wonderful round trip from Dana Point to Avalon and back. Catalina Express has this down! Very clean boat, great staff, and a smooth ride. We even saw a whale on the way back to Dana Point. My only recommendation is to fine tune distributing luggage to passengers in Dana Point. When we got back, everyone was lined up on the boat, couldn't get off, until others picked up their luggage. Everyone was on the pier. Maybe make an announcement allowing passengers without luggage to get off first?

    Love the Ferry
We took the ferry to Avalon. Booked the Commodore seats, which were totally worth it. You can get a "senior" discount if you are 55+ years old. The Ferry Mary (the signature bloody mary was worth it). The crew was nice and ferry's were on time.

    Day tripping!
Our day tripping to Avalon was fun and easy thanks to the Catalina Express. Sure you stand in line for a bit but it wasn’t excessive. Sure it’s not cheap but it’s comfortable, clean and safe. All information provided was accurate so there were no surprises. Signs for parking were clear, but parking was another $22 charge for the day fyi. Overall we had a magical day on Avalon and we’d do it again.

    Amazing time in Catalina
I took a trip to Catalina with my ladyfriend to celebrate my 55th birthday. The Catalina Express ferry was a fun and enjoyable experience.I highly recommend doing the little upgrade to Commodore class,as you get priority boarding, and you get complimentary drinks and snacks. My ladyfriend and I enjoyed a mini champagne bottle. They have regular drinks, beer, wine champagne, bloody mary. And assorted snacks like Chex Mix and mini Chips Ahoy.Very smooth ride, and you arrive in a little over an hour. You pass by The Queen Mary at the Long Beach port, and it's cool to view the island from the ship.Gives you kind of Jurassic Park vibes,it's just cool looking! It is beautiful, and most hotels, restaurants, shops, etc are all within a 5 to ten minute walk from the port.Bring luggage with wheels.I recommend The Bluewater Avalon restaurant.Fresh seafood overlooking a boating dock.Huge portions! We both had a wonderful time.Highly recommend Catalina Express!

    A great experience
I had no idea what to expect and it was great! We booked the Commodore Lounge and I highly recommend that ticket. We sat in an enclosed area, lots of windows to see, and you have a bar with cocktails and snacks. I felt bad for the people who sat outside, in the back. They got a little damp on the ride back. All the employees were friendly and helpful.

The Adventure Buddies had a great experience parking, checking in, and boarding The Catalina Express to Avalon. Everything went smoothly, including the ride to Avalon. Everyone wore masks, the galley was open for snacks and drinks, and the crew was helpful with instruction regarding the COVID rules. We were fortunate to have a smooth journey although we still took motion sickness pill in case. It was just over an hour to Avalon. We highly recommend this mode of transport to Catalina with multiple departure times to choose from!

Boats are on time, seating is comfortable, boarding and exiting is fairly quick and painless. Saw many dolphins on the journey to the island, did not see any on the way back to the mainland. Finding the terminal can be daunting and it's important to note that there are 2 terminals (Long Beach and San Pedro) so make sure you know which one you're using. Taxis and Ubers might take you to the wrong one.

Horrendous! They could not find our reservation even though I PAID for it via telephone the prior evening, and would NOT allow us on the ferry until I paid AGAIN for the same tickets!!

No amount of rational explanation was sufficient for the snotty woman at the ticket window to locate our paid for reservation. We had to make the ferry, so were forced to pay in duplicate. Preposterous!

We arrived at the terminal in Long Beach in the late Thursday morning. The parking lot was easily accessible with plenary os spaces. The lines to purchase the ticket was short and employees very efficient. The ride to the island is pleasurable you can choose to Stand and take photos or you can take an hour nap like my husband chose to do. Buy your return tickets upon arrival to the island to make sure they aren’t sold out for the day you want to return.

I took the ferry ride on Saturday, 7/20/24 at 9:00 pm from Avalon to San Pedro and it was one of the worst experiences I've had with a service provider. The staff's behavior was rude and unprofessional, leaving me with a bad impression.

From the moment we boarded the boat, it was evident that the staff lacked basic courtesy and customer service skills. One of our family members simply stretched his legs after a long day, only to be scolded by a staff member as if he were a child. We understand that the boat was full and space was limited, but there are better ways to address such situations. This particular employee seemed tired and clearly had no interest in providing good customer service.

The most appalling incident occurred at the end of the boat ride when I was exiting with my teenage daughter. I was pushed, causing me to exit the boat before my daughter. As I waited for her, I found myself next to a staff member who started yelling at me to "keep walking." When I explained that I was waiting for my daughter, he continued to shout at me, disregarding my concerns. His insensitive response, asking why I had left her in the first place, was completely uncalled for. As a paying customer, I expected to be treated with respect and dignity, but instead, I was subjected to unnecessary hostility.

This level of customer service is unacceptable and reflects poorly on the company as a whole. I had high hopes for a pleasant and enjoyable experience, but unfortunately, the staff's behavior left me deeply disappointed. I will not be utilizing their services again and will actively discourage others from doing so.

It is my sincere hope that the management takes this review seriously and addresses the issues at hand. Customer service should be a top priority, and it is clear that there is a dire need for improvement in this area. As a paying customer, I deserved to be treated with respect and professionalism, neither of which was demonstrated during my time on the ferry ride.

We took the Catalina Express to Avalon from Long Beach. One of our friends traveling with us is afraid to be on a boat but she did really well with this trip. We stayed inside on the way there because it was midday, full sun and we didn't want to get fried. It was busy, I would say not a seat to spare, yet it was not too noisy. The ride was smooth and we played cards during the trip. Now on the way back we had this grand idea with hopes to see dolphins and the sunset from the deck. What we got mostly was soaked with salt spray, we were so cold and the view was ok but really not that spectacular from the deck seating. The water was much choppier on the way back and having to do it again I would definitely stay inside.

Great transport and friendly staff , but commodores club not anything special. We had a group of 6 and so had to sit separately away from each other, no allocated seating :(
Lots of kids and a toddler screamed most of the trip. Whilst meant to have priority loading etc we all got let off same time and it just didn’t seem worth the extra $ . The general service was great.

Great customer service, great crew. We were able instantly change our departure time, due to severe weather conditions, without any issues.
One comment goes to the captian who was taking us to Catalina island. Weather conditions were much better than during our return trip, but that ride was horrible! It felt like never ending Rollercoaster. Ride back was beautifully and smooth, with much worse conditions.
Overall great experience, great service. Would definitely recommend

5 minutes before departure, sitting on the top deck cabin. Here’s been my experience so far: we got here about 30 minutes before our departure at 10am. Left right on time too. 10 on the dot.

Parking was alllmost full, but don’t worry there’s still just enough spots. You’ll also have to pay for parking.

We went to gate 1, waited for a few minutes then started to load 20-15 minutes before departure. Got seated, then we met the captain and he was funny. He made sure we knew the bar would be open.

Boat wasn’t too crowded but it’s advised to get here early so you can get on the boat first and grab a seat by the window.

Trip will take about 45 minutes to get to the island, and from there you’re on practically on the Trans-Catalina trail. See my review about the trail..

My wife and I drove down to Dana Point from Newport Beach to avoid the crowded boat to Catalina from Newport. We were going to Avalon to celebrate our anniversary. I am shocked at how poorly your operation is being run. First off is your inept parking situation that you charge $20 for. An elderly gentleman scans a piece of paper to let you in and then hands you another piece of paper smaller than a 3 X 5 card and tells you to scan that one to get out of the parking lot. Having spent a large part of my life around IT equipment I immediately knew this was an awful system. True to my thoughts upon returning to get my vehicle I was stuck in a line of over 20 cars when your scanner did not read the scans properly and passenger after passenger struggled to get out the $20 lot!!! Why was there no one there to assure your customers an easy exit????? The boat ride over was even less enjoyable when many passengers were allowed to bring LARGE dogs on the boat. Your policy states "that the animals must be in a crate or muzzled and leashed" We saw only one critter muzzled on the trip over and back and he laid in the aisle. I did not see any service dogs amongst the many critters aboard on either trip. Needless to say I will NEVER be taking another Catalina Express anywhere and especially not out of Dana Point harbor.
