Just 2km drive from the village of Foinikounta is a beach and bar with a sign saying Zanzibar beach. Free easy car parking at several points along the beach with different bars. This is a lovely open stretch of sandy beach, 2.5km long. Just three restaurants open and offering sunbeds in mid June 2022, two at the very end one side, and one at the opposite end. One in the middle, where there are still wood and thatch umbrellas, seems to be being rebuilt but is not yet operating. A really nice quiet beach for strolling and swimming, families playing, relaxing and enjoyable.

This beach with accompanying restaurant is our favorite in all of Greece. My husband is from Greece so we visit for several weeks every year. In our most recent visit, we spent an entire month in the area and went to Zanzibar every single day because we like it so much. First, the beach itself is perfect. Zanzibar is located at the end of a long, golden sand beach with fantastic views out to the nearby islands. The beach descends very gradually into the water, which makes it shallow for about 50 meters or so. This set-up is perfect for young children. Kids can play easily and safely in the shallow water, while also accessing the deeper water if and when you want to. The sand, with widely spaced sunbeds, also provides plenty of space for children to make sand castles while parents relax on the sunbeds. The long beach also allows for walks. While conveniently located just off the main road, Zanzibar is tucked below the road on a steep hill. So, when you’re at the beach, the road is high above you and nearly hidden from sight. The food and service are also impeccable. The food is so good it would be well worth eating at this restaurant even if it was located in the middle of a densely packed city with no view. Here, however, you get to enjoy delicious food while lounging on your sunbed or sitting a few steps up at the restaurant while gazing at a beautiful sea view. The menu has a delicious selection ranging from exquisitely done Greek cuisine, like stuffed zucchini flowers and pasta with shrimp, to American classics with a twist, like burgers with BBQ sauce, and the latest delicious food trends, like beet salad with avocado. Even the kids menu was especially good. For instance, the chicken nuggets were made of real, freshly cooked chunks of chicken. Every day there are also one or two specials and often freshly caught fish available as well. So, even while eating there nearly every day for a month we had different food every time, while also repeating some of our favorites. We especially enjoyed all the amazing fish dishes, including ceviche, tuna tartar, crawfish, stira, barbounia, mussels, and scallops. The fish was always cooked perfectly. The wine and cocktails were also delicious. This wonderful food is also accompanied by equally wonderful service. The staff were all friendly and attentive. If you’re visiting the area, don’t miss Zanzibar!
