About
The Himeville Museum and Fort is both a historical site (the old fort, and prison) as well as a well-kept local history museum. , Each of the rooms is either a room in the house, representing the era, or it is dedicated to the life and times of the area: the prison, the telephone exchange, the school: the farming implements of the time. What makes this museum different is that it also represents the varieites of communities in the area: from the original inhabitants, the first people of South Africa, the Khoi/San with local caves able to be visited to see their representations there, through to the settlers and other people of the wider area, to the fauna and flora, clothing and the kitchens of the day: Open garden courtyard in the middle of the fort, shaded, and a bench to rest on - this is a representative and diverse museum that has something of interest to everyone, young and old, local and from all over the globe.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The charming Himeville Museum is considered to be among the best rural Museums in the country. Built in 1899, it offers a wide and interesting range of exhibits.
There are fossils and Stone Age artefacts; a comprehensive display on the Bushmen, as well as African beadwork and artefacts. Each room adds further interest to the fascinating history of South Africa. The displays also show the life of early settlers, the Anglo Boer War and the two World Wars.
Barbara kindly showed us around. Thank you.

Museum is very informative and interesting. I love that everything is original, from the very old newspapers and photos to the clothing and even the rooms!

I thoroughly suggest a stop in this museum, even if you are no history buff. Fantastically set out in an old fort and prison, with everything from WW1 to the Koi people, dinasours, and fossils. They really look after this little place, and I was very impressed by the diversity, amount of items on display and the love that they have put into keeping history alive. Well done to the team that are responsible for this museum. Take the kids and grandparents alike.

For such a tiny town, this museum was excellent, and showed the history of Himeville. They had some very interesting pieces. No charge - just a donation if you wish

Himeville Museum was originally built as a fort in the Boer War, and later became a prison. It has an an excellent display of Bushman / San art and artefacts. Also an informative display of fossils. It provides an excellent overview of the local area, and local history, including that of the major Himeville families.
This rural museum is well maintained and curated. It captures the essence of the community, and its displays value the lives and contributions of its people.
The grounds are lovely. When we were there, the apples were just beginning to fall off the trees.
The Museum is a good destination (or alturnatively, it is a well worth stopping for!) It was pleasing to see people of all races and colour attending it. Entrance is by donation.

Dear Chris P
Thank you for mentioning the outside rooms: many visitors are caught up in the well preserved main house, but the outside rooms include the schoolroom exhibit, the fishing room, the KhoiSan rock art exhibit and more.
Looking forward to welcoming you again.

We stopped off here after checking out of the Himeville Arms and were pleased that we did. Although small, the museum packs in a huge amount of information which is displayed in a meaningful order. The museum building has a fascinating history and the displays make the very most of the rooms and space available. Well worth a visit, just don't forget to make a donation on the way out so small gems like this can be sustained.

One of the few attractions in Himeville, so we popped in to pass the time. We were warmly greated and left to do our own investigating. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of the old furniture and examples of life in earlier days. There were cells were prisoners were previously held and one can actually feel the spirits of a bygone era. Very informative and really worth a visit when you are in the area.

Thanks for visiting, Janice!
We also love the fact that we have fully furnished rooms representing houses at that time. The kitchen equipment shows how much harder housewives worked in those days.
