My family of 25 visited Pasta Martelli and the cute town of Lari. The Martelli tour was about 20 minutes , it is a very small facility, but a very unique experience. The tour director did a very nice job showing us how the pasta was prepared from beginning to end. We managed to fit some into our suitcase and are planning a nice Italian dinner some night to remember our pleasant Lari visit.

Martelli Pasta Factory is Tucscany at its best. Its a small factory owned, operated, and staffed by very friendly family members in a compact setup of equipment, raw materials, and packaging. Out of this little factory comes some of the best pasta in the world. We consume a lot of pasta and Martelli is at the top of our list so we made the factory our first stop on a private car tour of Tuscany. I mention this because we were the only people at the factory but no matter, they gave us a thorough private and personal tour. We happened to be there on the one day a week they stop production and clean/maintain the equipment. Again it didn't matter as it was easy to see everything, even the "in production" pasta hanging on racks. A bonus here was the village of Lari, a small medieval walled village with a castle. The central square had a couple of quaint untouristy shops and a cafe with outside tables. Even if you are not into pasta I think this is a must stop for Tuscany visitors. We carried home several bags of pasta.

What a discovery and what a great atmosphere! The village of Lari is beautiful, with nice little shops and bars and friendly people. In the middles of the centre, beside the medieval fortress is this small factory that is surely worth a visit. Look around, buy some pasta in any shop in town, visit the butcher close by (great people and super food) and take a cup of coffee in the shadow. Nice....

Tour was not offered. We had a long way only for this visiting. There was no indication for the closed visiting tours on the website. I looked it up right on the day of visiting. “Official reason” was a machine which had been broken. My advise is to call them in advance, thats what I missed.

We travelled to Italy with our teenage children –one of our main interests is food.
As we made appointments to have tours regarding Parmesan cheese, Gelato, Wine and Balsamic vinegar – Pasta was also a must.
It was not easy finding a factory for pasta that offers tours, but the Martelli family does offer on their website to come and see how they produce the pasta.
I corresponded with them back and forth and insuring that my arrival was noted. I was told that we can arrive between 10 am and 5 pm.
We arrived a little after 2 pm. The place was closed and a sign was hung outside: Tour begins at 3 pm. So, we waited patiently in a nearby café, anticipating the marvelous wonders of what we were going to see.
At 3 pm sharp we were back outside (it was mid – July!!!) waiting for someone to show up. At 3:15 a lady passed by us and we had to stop her and tell her – We are here for the tour?!.
She looked a bit surprised and told us to follow her. We came to a room with a large pasta machine. There was a man there- she said he will give you the tour.
Among the racket of the machine. in a very heavy Italian accent we received a 30 second explanation that sounded like: the dough goes in here – the pasta comes out here, we make 4 kinds of pasta, bye, bye - close the door behind you!! – I am not kidding.
I was in a state of shock of how disappointing it was. No family history, no glorification of their pasta, nothing that would make you want to even taste their pasta , not to mention buy a package as a souvenir.
We made a special trip to Lari – the town of Martelli Pasta and this part of our trip was the downfall.
I don’t expect them to show us something that is not there, but I do expect them to give us some kind of experience to remember (in a good way).
I would of liked to hear about the family, how they started, what makes their pasta different from others….
Since their Martelli Pasta was not even on Tripadvisor I should have suspected it was not note worthy… well now it is.

Dear Sir, I'm Luca Martelli that probably made Your tour. The visit in the factory is a event not standard, on the standard visit is necessary to contact a tour operator. Then there is the possiblity that in the time that You have been in the factory, I had a small time to show the history, and I m sorry for it. But I also must have attention on the pasta production. I m italian and then when I talk in English I have that italian accent.

We travelled for about an hour from Monteverdi Mattrimino to get to Lari to have a look at the old fashioned way of making pasta only to find that they are closed for the holidays. A fact not mentioned in the Lonely Planet travel guide. The view from the castle is very good though.

Dino Martelli

It was a great little tour to this family own pasta factory. All of them were very friendly, they open their factory to tourists. The pasta is more expensive but you'll know why when you visit the factory. Love it

Buonasera. Cordialmente. Dino Martelli

Good guided tour (15-20 min.) around this family run pasta factory. Explaining how pasta is made and showing a few machines in action. The products can be purchased next door.
I would call it a “must do” in Lari. Enjoy!

It was an interesting view of pasta making with explanations on the different kinds of wheat flour. They use semolina which is healthier than white flour as Semolina is coarse not fine. semolina is made from a rougher variety of wheat, which is why it has a yellow colour. ... White flour, on the other hand, is rich in simple carbs without fiber and protein. We saw different machines used and held and tasted pasta. It was a quick tour given by a Marteli family member. They did not serve meals or drinks.
