Hi! I’m on a fantastic vacation with Adventure Women (13 days, 15 women plus a guide). I was blessed to stay in this amazing hotel for 2 nights. The inside: fresh flowers all over, eclectic pieces, lovely rooms (basic but everything you need), fabulous Onsen for a super hot soak after hiking. But the stand out is the staff and the food. I’m vegan and there was a vegetarian and pescatarian in the group. All accommodations were made with a smile. The food is amazing and the staff treats you so well you hate to leave! JIAN~You are amazing!! Thank you for your excellence and beautiful spirit.

After a traumatic experience on the Kumano Kodo which involved an emergency evacuation by the most awesome rescue workers from the fire dept, we arrived by taxi at this hotel. Jian greeted us at the taxi with his calm and reassuring presence; carried our luggage and settled us in. I will always remember how soothing it was at arrival- the warm lights, a guest singing at the piano, Jian’s concern. The rest of the staff were all equally helpful. It is clear that the many awards the place has won are well-deserved.

We based ourselves here which seems to have put us in the minority; most stay on way past KK and then move on which is such a shame. This place really gives you a different way of seeing rural Japan.
Our room has a great view and in traditional way is a room by day before taking our sleeping mats etc out at night. Storage is limited but with some some organisation is fine.
Highlights are the staffs willingness to help about anything including dropping you off at walking points nearby.
The other highlight is the food which is generous and of very high quality but set menus so kids who want choice may struggle. Traditional Japanese food.
I hung out in the common area beside log fire and enjoyed the view with few beers etc.
The Onsen was lovely.
This place is made for relaxing and it may take a few days to get into the swing of it.
Relaxing in the Onsen after along walk is lovely. Nowhere else we could fine does the combination of accommodation, food and Onsen on the trail in this area.
overall it is a very friendly relaxing place with good food and superb hospitality.

This place is exceptional in its location, food and service. Each room has wonderful views of the mountains and the small mountain village. A small private verandah is perfect. the food is a real highlight - I really had the sense of eating fresh forest pickings that were absolutely delicious. The famous friendly and amazing Japanese customer service was provided by our hosts. This is an absolute gem of a place. We stayed on first and easiest day's walking along the Kumano Kodo trail.

Excellent place to stay along the Kumano Kodo. The owner, Jian, was wonderful! Welcoming, enthusiastic, kind. The food was great. The view was out of this world.

The rating would be 5 for the view and 3 for everything else.
I went out of my way to stay here based on the reviews which describe an outstanding ryokan. I found the views exceptional but the accommodation and food to be very ordinary.
If not walking , it is very remote.Either a 1.8 km steep uphill walk from the nearest bus stop or a lift from Takijiri from Jian. It was raining when we arrived and Jian very kindly gave us a lift in his very small van, suited to the very narrow roads. In the morning we walked down to the bus stop.
I emailed directly prior to arrival and received only an automated reply. Two days later I messaged through booking.com and received a quick reply from Jian.
Because of the rain the mist was very impressive and the view is spectacular .But mist is seen in other parts of this region!I am sitting now at my next ryokan watching the mountains and the mist.
Kiri no sato is a small modest ryokan. The common areas and hallways have concrete floors where shoes or indoor slippers can be worn. The dining area and small sitting area have vaulted ceilings with very attractive use of Japanese timber. There is a lovely outdoor deck too but we didn't use it because of the rain.
Our room, number 2, could accommodate 4 but we were only two.The tatami was in good condition and the heating worked well although the room was very cold on our arrival. The decoration was spartan and a little shabby. The chairs in the room were the traditional Japanese on the floor type. The only sitting area was outside which can't be used in the rain or cold. The room had a toilet and sink but the wooden surround of the sink was not in good condition. It was very clean.
As a regular traveller to Japan, itwas a first for me to be asked to prepare my own futon.Im happy to do this but I fell it reflects a lower level of service. The sheets were a little too small and my duvet cover fell off in the night.
Apart from Jian collecting us from Takijiri and his jovial welcome, I felt the service was lacklustre. There were 3 young European people who help out in the kitchen and when we arrived they were ensconced at the prime table closest to the welcome fire, using their laptops and I though they were guests!!
The dinner I thought was average.Nice sashimi and ordinary pork and vegetable shabu shabu with a few small vegetable dishes. On a cold night, dessert was a sorbet/granita! Rice and soup.
Breakfast was below average.A whole grilled fish which I found difficult to eat because of the bones, soup, rice and a few vegetable dishes.
Because it is a small ryokan, the onsens are not unexpectedly small. There were 4 showers on the ladies side and be warned, the warm water takes a long time to arrive! My poor son had a cold shower. He thought there wasn't hot water in the showers! There was no water in the outside onsens.
I paid 22,000 yen for two people for one night, breakfast and dinner included.

This is an exceptional place to stay. The artistic touches inside and out, the view, the food, our room, and the hospitality of Jyan-san are second to none. Highly recommended.

A fabulous experience when walking the Kumano Kodo. Beautiful atmosphere, food and accommodation. Also visit Meguru cakes next door.

Is this accomodation in Takahara (our first night after Takajiri) and do you have availability for 2 people for Sunday 11th November?
