In addition to an ample aquarium, you can learn about Lake Biwa from various angles such as geology and sociology. Hundreds of waterlilies will welcome you if you visit there in summer. Enough displays to spend a half day. You can use a big car park, boat service from Ohtsu or 25 min bus service from a near train station.

just a super awesome place to visit, i recommend to anyone in the area. Even though it says november 2014, it was june 2007 and it was an amazing experience...you can even play with some of the lake critters!

An interesting discovery Lake Biwa both nature and history. Surrounding area is quite nice and quiet too. Feel like the crowded city is far left behind.

This museum is located on the side of Lake Biwa. The upper floors had displays on early history, geology and human settlement and were very well done. The mastodon exhibit was outstanding as were the full size boats. Unfortunately, most of the information was in Japanese but, despite this, many of the displays were self evident. The lower floors contain... More

I traveled in a group, and we got one native english speaker (staff) to guide us. It was fun to know almost all the facts and the explanation in english. the most interesting part is the aquarium. There are many tanks, and they even have many special tanks for breeding and also for research.

We went on a rainy day with somewhat low expectations. The fish exhibits, while not colorful, were unique and demonstrated the diversity in freshwater lakes. Couple of Nice children's areas- one to touch fish and the other sort of a fish related play area. My five year old loved it! Attached restaurant not bad for type.

I like fish, frogs, turtles, etc. and this museum contains a lot of nice aquariums. Lake fish are not very colorful, but are beautiful in their own way. It's a nice afternoon activity.
