If you go to Ako, be sure to make time to see this lovely shrine. Though it is not large, there are several outbuildings with displays of art and artifacts and also a lovely little garden. Visiting the main shrine building is free, but entrance to the outbuildings has an extra fee, which you pay in a small foyer to... More

The shrine is very beautiful and the statues are incredible to look at. The shrine requires you to purify yourself before entering. Though I do not speak or read japanese. I found the shrine to be beautiful and serene. It is a fitting monument to the 47 ronin.

Ōishi-jinja is dedicated to the 47 Rōnin. Individual statues of these heroic men line the shrine’s causeway. History: The story of the 47 Rōnin is also known in Japanese as the Genroku Akō Jikken 元禄赤穂事件 (Genroku (Era) Akō Incident). The Ronin themselves are called the Akō-rōshi 赤穂浪士, rōshi being another word for Rōnin, and I think a better name, as... More

We visited here after Ako Castle ruins. It’s about 5 minutes’ walk from the castle ruins to the shrine. (About 18 minutes from Banshu Ako Station.) Before getting to the shrine, you’ll probably pass the gate called “Nagayamon” gate. If you are a fan of 47 Ronin, you don’t want to miss it. There is almost no translation in any... More

I wanted to visit this shrine and also photograph the statues of the 47 Ronin that adorn the walkway leading to the shrine. It was a lovely atmosphere and we had a pleasantly warm day for our visit. As I strolled along the walkway taking photos of each of the men I felt a sadness knowing the story of these... More

I visited this place about ten years ago indeed, but still this was the most memorable place for me because I was fond of the historical story 'Chushingura'. Even the size of shrine relatively smaller than our famous shrines, the statues along the walk welcomes you and provide very calm atmosphere.
