Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Not sure if the castle itself is open for visitors, I only saw the outside, fortified walls...however the castle garden is open and free to visit, it's a beautiful place well kept, and with amazing views over the river and the city on the other side

I walked all the way to the castle only to find that it’s now military headquarters, so not open to the public.
I’d recommend checking out the castle gardens though. It has a nice view of Lisbon

On the way back to the ferry from the Christo we got the bus driver to drop us near the castle gardens not knowing what to expect. We were bowled over. The small garden contains two amazing trees with fascinating root stocks and a small band stand. From the terrace there are great views back to the Christo and the bridge as well as to Lisbon but best of all the restaurant is a gem. Fom here one can watch the shipping as one eats and the food and drink is wonderful.
We started with a caipirinha with a cocout topping which was unusual. Our starters were roasted red peppers and roasted sweet potato with honey topping, both very good. The turbot on a bed of mixed veg was also really good although I found the bread and cheese topping a bit heavy for the delicate fish. We could only share the absolutely delicious dessert of a chocolate puddle pudding, exquisite wild fruits of the forest ice cream and fruit. Although we did not speak Portuguese the staff were really helpful. It was not too expensive by Lisbon standards for a really memorable meal.

The Miradouro, sightseeing point, has a panoramic view over Lisbon which really is breathtaking.
There are even benches for those who would wish to stay there for a while enjoying the panorama.
As far as getting there, avoid driving. Getting up there by car is quite difficult with very narrow streets filled with car parked in various awkward positions. But if you eventually get there, you will not find a suitable place to park your car.
I am going to propose you a real nice alternative.
Just follow this routing.
Leave your car in Lisbon.
Go to Cais das Colunas at Praça do Comércio (Terreiro do Paço). This is the place where you will take the ferry to cross the Tagus. Get off the boat at Cais do Ginjal.
Walk West (the river is at your right side), until you find the panoramic lift. Take it up.
Once you are in the picturesque old Almada, find your way to the Castelo. You may use your smartphone to help you inputting the following coordinates N38.6844 W9.1562. That's the entrance of the garden.
Cross it towards the river and there you have the fabulous view.
One last piece of advice: DON'T GO TO THE RESTAURANT SITTING THERE (Amarra ò Tejo)! I had a meal there and can assure you it is very poor and expensive. You may read my detailed review on Trip Advisor at http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g189163-d850655-r211687078-Amarra_o_Tejo-Setubal_Setubal_District_Central_Portugal.html#REVIEWS.

Hope this helps.

Whilst in Lisbon we was told about the lifts up to the castle. Such a lovely spot we didn't go into the castle grounds as found it to late in the day. But the area of quant shops and narrow streets' was amazing. And the view was so magnificent, it needs to be seen to believe it. If we went back again we would definitely go here again.

Take couple of hours and enjoy the history, view of the city and of course a glass of wine with the view.

Don´t go in search of old castle, there is no castle.
Instead of the old castle, go find the elevator and the fantastic views that it offers. Once there drink a cup of tea or a gin at the local bar. If it is lunch time try the pizza house next door or use the elevator and at the bottom choose one of the two restaurants there. The food isn´t awesome but the views are quite good.
When you go up again, you may walk in the old streets but in my opinion ( and I am a local) there isn't much to see, well maybe the "Amarra o Tejo" restaurant and the garden in front of him could be a point of interest.

No castle, no view of Lisboa. Ordinary yard and parking of hotel here in this lane. And photos don't gove evidance of this place.
