- alohatripperHonolulu, Hawaii1,746 contributionsBrief but scenic ferry ride to Miyajima IslandWe left Hiroshima and took the ferry to Miyajima Island. The ride was only 10 min but thoroughly enjoyable. Our guide, Hiroko, felt our driver and minivan would better to stay behind. So we were able to take the next ferry out. Like an interisland flight between the neighbor islands of Hawaii, there isn't much time between embarkation and disembarkation.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 15 November 2023

I used my Icoca prepaid card so I don’t know the cost of the ride. It was a short ride and we had the choice to either stay outside and watch the views or stay inside where it was warmer. Very organized both in boarding and disembarking from the ferry. Staff were helpful.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 9 May 2024
- Prabir GKolkata (Calcutta), India3,099 contributionsSmooth way to reach Miyajima islandThe ferry costs ¥200 one way and runs every 15 minutes from 5.50 am till 10.15 pm. It is advisable to stand on the right side of the ferry to get a good view of Torii Gate. You can sit inside AC hall or stand outside or on the top , if you prefer fresh sea breeze. The ride takes 10 minutes to reach the jetty of the Miyajima island. I really enjoyed the ride.Visited May 2024Travelled on businessWritten 14 May 2024
- karenpammy2016San Francisco, California1,275 contributionsGreat ferry ride over to Miyajima! If you arrive early in the morning, the first ferry ride over to Miyajima that passes directly in front of the Great Torii starts at 9:10a.m., otherwise if you go earlier than that, it will just be a ferry ride over. You may purchase your round-trip tickets through the machines at the station and then head over to the gate when it is close to boarding time. The JR Miyajima Ferry ride is a very timely departure for the 10 minute ride over to Miyajima. There is no need to grab a seat if you would like to photograph the Great Torii as you the ride over is very short. Cars are also allowed on board and are boarded first. Make sure you check the time schedule for departures later in the day when you return. It is a very convenient and efficient ferry service.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 September 2024

If you have a JR train pass you may use it on the JR Ferry for free transport to Miyajima Island. The trip was around 10 minutes, quick and smooth. We were at the island during November of 2019. During this time they were doing repair work giant torii shrine so it was completely covered up.

This was my second visit to Itsukushima Shrine, but this time I was able to walk to the torii at low tide, which was a wonderful experience.
When I was resting with my family on the beach, I saw this view including the Otorii gate and felt the romance of how I lived my life.
However, one regret was that there were two ferries operating, and when I bought a ticket on the way out, I explained that I didn't have time, so I could ride either one, so I bought the one that wasn't JR in a hurry, and I was able to get on the way out safely.
But on the way home, the JR flight seemed to be faster, so I asked a middle-aged female boarding staff member wearing glasses, just in case, "Can I ride with this ticket?" I said, "I can't ride, it's right on the ticket!!" It was a harsh response. I thought it was an outbound flight, and I dared to check it because the tickets were different, but I was extremely uncomfortable with this response, and my precious pleasant memories were blown away at once by this female staff member on the way home.
Since this is not a ferry or co-operated flight to Miyajima, I dared to make Contributions to avoid making mistakes and making unpleasant comments like Shoshoku!

The boarding time was only about 10 minutes, so there was almost no difference from the Miyajima Matsudai ferry.
This time, it was early in the year and there were frequent operations, so there were hardly any left over passengers or waiting times, and once we boarded, we arrived in no time. Incidentally, the ferry that runs the route closest to the large torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine is operated by JR West Japan Ferry, and it is also possible to board using the Seishun 18 Ticket.

We visited the island of Miyajima. Took a train from Hiroshima and then ransferred to the JR ferry for a short ferry ride to the island. The ferry was very comfortable with separate room for the elderly and an open deck on top.

Hello, my husband goes with a scooter for reduced mobility, can we get on the ferry to go to Miyajima?
Written 12 February 2020
We plan to drive and take our car on the ferry from Miyajima to Hiroshima. Is it possible? If so, how much would it cost for vehicle and passengers (1 mini van and 6 passengers)? Thank you.

Cars are taken over on the lower deck of the ferry, so it is possible. Unsure of price

Hiya, yes we bought a JR pass also. You can use it from the Airport and travel all the way to Osaka on it. You would also use it from Toyko to Odawarra, then you will need to buy a Hakone travel pass to get you up to Hakone. This covers the train, buses, ropeways and sightseeing boat on Lake Ashi
We thought that we would use the train from Odawarra up into Hakone will a bit of a walk to our hotel - remember it is very hilly. But the bus service is also very good and at the information desk at Odawarra, they suggested the bus as it stopped right outside our hotel - which was fantastic as it was pouring rain.
I suggested going to Gora Station and catching the ropeways and cablecars - stopping at the top to see the geothermal area. and then down the other side and catching the boat and go on the loop and back up and over on the cablecars and ropeways. We loved doing that, but if you dont, there is a bus stop on the other side of the lake at either stops there if you want to explore and return by bus.
Hope this helps!

If you will be in Japan for about 1 week and traveling between cities such as the ones you listed, it is worthwhile to purchase the 7 day Japan Railpass . In addition, buy the PASSMO smart card. This card allows you to travel on the local buses, metro/subway, nonJR trains. You need to use cash (yen) to purchase your pre-paid PASSMO card. It can be purchased at any local train/metro station and re-loaded at any PASSMO machine. You can select "english" language at the PASSMO machine and follow the instructions. We purchased $50 worth and reloaded the card several times. The nice thing about the smart card is you can keep it for future trips. No expiration date. We did many day trips using the JR Railpass from the major cities. For example from Kyoto or Osaka, you can take a day trip using your JR Pass to Nara, Hiroshima, Miyajima island. Shin-Osaka is the train station in Osaka for bullet trains. You can cover Nara in 1 day and Miyajima/Hiroshima another day. The JR pass covers the JR Ferry ride to Miyajima. Between Osaka, Kyoto to/from Tokyo, you can take one of many shinkansen bullet trains. There are several different types of bullet trains. On JR, you cannot take the Mizuho or Nozomi (fastest line) however, you can take one of the other bullet trains Sakura, Hikari or Kodama. If you are planning to visit Hakone for 2 nights from Tokyo, take the JR bullet train to Odawara, then buy the 3-day Hakone Free Pass at Odawara. The free pass allows you to travel to and from Hakone using Odakyu Railway's unlimited use of Odakyu affiliated buses, trains, boats, cablecars and ropeways within the Hakone free area. You should spend the time now to do your research on train routes. Download Hyperdia, the Japan train schedule link. Under Hyperdia's search parameters/route, uncheck all types of routes except for Bullet Train (Shinkansen) and Japan Railway. This will direct you to those trains that are available using your JR Railpass. You should also read up on Trip Advisors blog for the specific city you plan to visit. There are helpful suggestions written by travelers about what to see and how to get there. Too much to see in 7 days.
