Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Many people come to Miyajima to visit Itsukushima Shrine. But actually there are many other sightseeing spots in Miyajima. Daishoji is one of them, and I strongly recommend you to visit, if you don’t mind climbing stairs. It is a big temple at mountainside and around the main building there are many small halls. It is quite hard to get there, but I am sure it is worth. In the premises, the air is refreshing.

I've been to Miyajima a handful of times now and make an effort to visit Daishoin Temple every time. This temple ranks in my top 3 favorites throughout all of Japan. Be warned, there are quite a few stairs to walk up when first entering the temple. Once in the complex, the shrines and scenery will blow you away, it's absolutely beautiful. I love the statues scattered throughout the complex, many are funny and cute while others are more serious. Toward the back of the temple is a room with lanterns that is my favorite. It's so beautiful how the temple is laid out with the mountains in the background. This to me feels like real Japan and I highly recommend visiting.

Yes, I knew the main attraction in Miyajima was the Itsukushima Shrine and Torii Gate (as of December 28, it is under renovation and covered in scaffold). However, don't miss the short walk to Daishoin Temple. And try to look for the side path which takes you up the hill with little buddha statues along the path.
I've visited many temples in Japan but this one is quite unique. It is on a hill so you have good vantage points and the landscaping is beautiful. Also, it is VERY well maintained.
Don't write this off as another temple! It is well worth a visit!

The mountain name is Takiyama (Takiyama), and it is the head temple of the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism, and the principal images are Sanki Daigongen (main hall), Namikiri Fudo Myo-o (imperial prayer hall), and Juichimen Kannon (Kannon hall).
The head temple of the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism is Ninna-ji, and the next head temples are this temple and Kongo-ji (Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture).
This is the temple with the oldest history on Miyajima, and it is said to have been in charge of the rituals as the head temple of Itsukushima Shrine and has been in charge of the shrine priests.
It was about a 5-minute walk from the exit of Itsukushima Shrine. Many people visit Itsukushima Shrine, but it seemed that not many people visit Daisho-in here.
I have been to Itsukushima Shrine several times myself, but this was my first time here.

This buddhist temple is a bit of a climb up from the village area on Miyajima island. It's on the local map, but a bit out of the way, up some boring streets before the climb up. The path takes you through a garden with 500 small buddha statues. At the temple itself there are various buildings, statues, gardens, shops, and toilets. It's definitely worth the climb, and affords great views back down the hill to the rest of the town.

By far, one of the prettiest places visited during our trip to Japan, an absolute must to do when in Miyajima. Much more beautiful than Itsukushima Shrine! To get there, we climb a small road, we get there gently. At the foot of the entrance, a small river which winds through the magnificent vegetation. Then we walk in a magical place, the birds, the sound of the water, the smell of incense.... The highlight of the place is the paths on the side that you have to go down and follow with hundreds sandstone bonzes all wearing real red caps knitted in pearl cotton.

It's a short walk from the town center and that apparently scares most people away from this hidden gem. A very atmospheric temple surrounded by woods with so many things to see. One of the highlights was the walk with the small statues. I think this is one of my favourite temples.

It's a place you must visit when you go to Miyajima. Daisho-in is a shrine with beautiful scenery, clean grounds, and many things to see. It's a wonderful place. There are many halls on the grounds. Each hall has a solid appearance and gives you a relaxed feeling. It's nice to spend time here feeling the breeze. The halls are really splendid and you can feel the history. It's a soothing feeling. Below the Kannon Hall, there is a place where you can worship many Buddhas. It's difficult to walk inside, but you can feel Buddhism there.

We didn’t mean to visit this temple but took a wrong turn on the hike up Mount Misen. It’s very serene with the sound of running water and surrounded by forest. The small statues and carvings are fascinating - there is so much to see. Well worth the steps and short walk from the town.

We spent surprisingly long time here. The temple is very vast with many buildings and exciting history. There are not as many tourists as elsewhere on the island, but this was actually the most interesting place on the island. Definitely worth a visit!
