It is wonderful to get away from the crowds of tourists on Miyajima. It is equally wonderful to walk under the trees on untended paths and stairs in Misen Woods. Wear comfortable, supportive, walking shoes. Bring a snack and water. Bottled water is only available from a vending machine at the summit. The paths are rough, much more so than... More

Get away from all of the tourists, secluded, quiet and beautiful. Went up the Momiji Dani route (hardest) and down the Daishoin route (medium). Finishing at the Daishoin temple/shrine was a great end to the hike. It was 90 degrees with nearly 100% humidity the day we climbed and it was difficult. Can't stress enough that you need a good... The walk through the woods to the summit is a great way of escaping the crowds below. It is a nice, covered walk, which can be challenging in places but offer great views.

There are many trails by which to explore the vast forest of the island. We wondered around for a while just enjoying the quiet time away from the crowds.

If you like walking in the wild you will like Miyajima. There are a number of trails around the woods that can be quite tranquil and remote from the masses if you seek them out. Yes the trip up to and down from the tallest mountain do have a large number of walkers but the rest of it is quite... More

Hiking on the island is a refreshing experience away from the big city. Even more wonderful is exploring many sites away from the tourists zone near and around the ferry terminal (the usual itinerary of tourists). I joined an ecotourism group tour that took us to the other side of the island (mainly on the eastern side away from the... More

You can hike up or down from the lookout point. We took the cable-car up and walked in one and a half hour back to the tori. You having a comfortable pace so we could enjoy the various views that we were offered. However, you have to be a fairly good walker, as there are parts just only rocks, but... More

Great to get amongst the nature on Miyajima. Welcome shade from the mid-afternoon sun amongst the trees.

I'm a strapping, young lad, but been I found some of the hikes challenging. There are lots of stairs..I mean, a LOT. It is still a very cool area. There are shrines all around, and it's painfully gorgeous with countless photo ops along the way.
