A Lot of Activities
Aug. 2020
After driving accross the afsluitdijk, we stopped at this village, Makkum. The lake Ijssel was used to be the South sea but after the afsluitdijk, the name was changed into Lake Ijssel. Top location for watersport and also important place for fishing for the villages around the lake. At some places next to the dyke you will find bird nesting area.

A Big Lake in the North of Netherlands
Mar. 2020
IJsselmeer is the biggest freshwater lake in the north part of Netherlands, bordering Lelystad-Enkhuizen, Noord Holland, the Afsluitdijk, Friesland, the Noordoostpolder and Flevoland. The river IJssel flows into the IJsselmeer. It's nice place to visit. For one likes to see boats but we'd prefer bird watching

The lake can be controlled now for its water level do to engineering feats. It is also fresh water. It’s worth seeing as it plays a large part of life in the northern Netherlands.

We booked in advance, you cant tell when the storms are going to be there. We made the best of it, the people are lovely as are all the places we visited, bit on the expensive side, a small heineken for 3 euro and its made there. !!

An iconic symbol of Dutch ingenuity & dike-building

This shallow freshwater lake, or more correctly inland bay created by the building of the Afsluitdijk [dam] completed in 1932, has a surface area of about 1,100 square kilometres. This largest lake in the Netherlands is feed primarily by waters from the River Ijssel. Its surface elevation is 40 cm below sea level. The lakes maximum depth is 7 metres and has an average depth of 5.5 metres. The lake is home to many boats, especially sailboats. We went for an enjoyable boat ride on the lake, and enjoyed the great views and energizing fresh air.

You wouldn’t know that it is a lake.

We walked along to the lake from Workum, where we were staying, and to be honest - I thought it was the sea! It is certainly a very pleasant area with very white beaches and good facilities. Very popular for kite surfing.

Nice

Very large inland lake. Used to be north sea, but separated by a dam with locks. Very nice small fishing villages dotted around the lake. At nice weather a lot if sailing ships to be seen. Some beaches around, but without accomodation like showers or bay-watch.

Great for kitesurfing!

Flat brackish water makes this IJsselmeer a safe and easy place to kitesurf. Lots of cute towns to visit along the way.
