Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A hidden hot spring with a 400-year history located 1100 m above sea level in the Mount Hachimantai. The building is a simple wooden structure that is showing its age, but it is kept clean and comfortable. Gray water with a sulfurous smell boils out from all around the area, providing a rich and wild bathing experience. The meals are simple but satisfying in both taste and variety, centering on local wild vegetables and river fish. This is not a hotel for those who prefer the sophistication of a well-equipped urban hotel, but it is recommended for travelers who want to enjoy a quiet time in the midst of the magnificent nature.

Ryokan is rustic with very basic amenities. We booked what we thought was a western room but the bedding was futon on a wooden box frame. There’s an attached toilet but no wash basin. There’s no heating/aircon. We visited mid-June and it was cold and had to wear additional layers and socks at night.
It’s a 5mins walk to the outdoor Onsens, two mixed use and one gender segregated. The mixed use onsens were being refurbished when we visited (check the website). The gender segregated was very pleasant. Water is hot, ph 3.1.
There are another indoor and outdoor gender segregated Onsens that’s attached to the main building. Both are small. The indoor Onsen is also where U take your bath, from a water trough.
Meals are very simple and would not be adequate for big eaters.
