Visited Montgomery Reef on our Kimberley cruise. An amazing experience seeing the water flow off the reef - going up channels on the reef in the small boats - lots of wildlife - birds, turtles, etc

Watching the water drop from high tide to then expose the Reef is one of the most stunning experiences in the Kimberley region. This is best done is small watercraft such as Zodiacs so that you can navigate around the Reef. Watching the water rush out of the Reef in rivulets then large streams is unforgettable. The bird life is amazing too. One of the many highlights on our Kimberley cruise from Darwin to Broome.

One of the best places we have been in Australia. As the tide drops the reef seems to rise out of the ocean in the middle of nowhere. There is a lagoon in the middle so water just rushes off all the time, as waterfalls or cascades. There are birds, dolphins and sea turtles there. We were able to get very close from our boat -you are not allowed to land which is a good thing as there were several boats there. A must see if at all possible during a cruise of the Kimberley coast.

One of the absolute highlights of our time in the Kimberleys on the Coral Expedition, was the Horizontal Falls. Such a unique and spectacular part of the world, with the privilege of getting up close to the reef as the tide drops and the reef emerges. The wildlife that was out in force was captivating, from an abundance of birds, to fish, turtles and stingrays... ever so glad we had the opportunity to see parts of Australia that not many see

This is nature at its best. The "invisible" reef slowly emerges from the sea as the dramatic tide drops. Within two hours the reef is exposed, and depending on the tides the day you visit, it can be just amazing or outrageous! I've had the privilege to visit twice and the tide really make a difference. A 2 meter tide is great because you can really see lots of wildlife in the water because the falling tide is not as aggressive so the water is calmer. We saw at least 12 sea turtles, sea snakes and dolphins. When you get a 3-4 meter tide … WOW it's like riding the rapids of Colorado as the rushing water gushes down off the reef. We explored the reef in zodiacs off an expedition ship, which was a perfect way to see nature at its BEST. Absolutely a MUST see if you are anywhere close to the area.

The cruise ship we were cruising with, make a stop here, and it a sight that will forever live in your memory. To be able to watch the reef come out from the sea and see water gushing out like waterfall is absolutely out of this world. We can highly recommend this place on your visit to Western Australia.
