Myōkōkōgen is famed for it's 9 local ski resort areas. The first of these, Akakura, was founded in the 1930s, making it one of the oldest established ski areas in the world. It is also a traditional mountain retreat of Japan's imperial family. Myōkō Kōgen is also well known for its many local onsen (hot springs) emanating from the Jigoku-dani valley between Mt. Myōkō and Mt. Mae The area is dominated by 'Hokushingogaku' - a spectacular series of five mountains (Madarao, Myōkō, Kurohime, Togakushi and Iizuna) that make up the border of Nagano and Niigata prefectures.

With 4 independent ski resorts all linked here they offer the 4 resort pass which is not necessarily needed. You can ski between Onsen and Kanko easily but you need a bus between the other two so you can't easily ski more than one on...More

If you like Nozawa Onsen (what's not to like?) you'll like this place, and for much the same reasons. It's a real Japanese mountain onsen village, with modern ski facilities grafted on. Beginners, intermediate & strong intermediate skiers are well catered for, and the reputed...More

Not a great ski area for good skiers and inundated on weekends with massive crowds. However it's a great family ski area especially with younger kids. The best runs up high, such as the Wall, are skied out almost instantly on weekends and it's difficult...More
