Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The roas leads to more adventures in Shirakawago. Commuters find the passage peaceful and quite modern.

We did this drive in autumn when we drove from Shirakawa-go towards Ishikawa and the Sea of Japan - This road is opened from June to early November and of course the best time is in autumn! Information about the White Road is available on the internet. There are many lookouts to appreciate the autumn leaves along the glorious drive plus a couple of waterfalls which we didn't have time to explore as we were driving through to Yamanaka onsen.
Tip: There is an option of doing it on a day trip from Shirakawa-go or Takayama. You only need to pay a one-way toll and spend a day exploring the various sights and making a U-turn as you hit the end of the White Road. Each lookout has parking available and some of the bigger ones have snack and toilet facilities. There are car rental companies in Takayama near the train station and do note you need to have international driving licence to rent a car.

The Hakusan National Park is beautiful, though winter access to the White Road isn't possible due to the snow. Access is from June to November.
It is called White Road because the Kanji for Hakusan is White Mountain and the Kanji for Shirakawa-Go is White River Village. The road connects Ishikawa to Gifu and named as such for each end point.
Autumn is the best time as the leaves turn from green to copper/gold. This is called Koyo and is extremely beautiful.
We went in July, which is Summer, and there was still plenty of snow, with the melt making the rivers and waterfalls run full. We went simply because we had a spare day off and chose this drive on that day.
The park can be hiked and there are many short walks to be taken to absorb the scenery. Unfortunately camping is not allowed, nor is taking flora or fauna from the park.
The one way trip costs around Y1400 - Y1600 depending on the size of your car. Mini buses pay around Y4900. There is a discounted return rate if you want to buy a return ticket when you enter the park.
The road is around 33km and takes around an hour non-stop due to the steepness and windiness of the road. However, you end up stopping at many spots for the photogenic scenery and the drive takes much longer.
There is also an onsen spa beside a waterfall which we walked to, so good shoes are a must if you want to stop and go walking.
Even on a rainy misty day, we were still amazed at the scenery. We do plan to go back next Autumn for the Koyo leaves.

We were there late October and it was beautiful. No public transportation, only privet cars. Tall road. Every stop on the road was nice, there was one bridge with monkeys on it, and one point where we got down to the crick where there was a very nice waterfall, an open onsen . Not an easy path but very very nice.

We joined a tour with White Ring Tours to visit the Shirakawa-go area - it was fabulous. From the World Heritage Gassho huts to the traditional lunch, we had an amazing day. Shirakawa-go is not yet overly commercialised which meant it was not busy and we were able to explore the town in some detail. The tour was well organised even though our guide was not fluent english speaking. He made every effort to use English to explain what we were doing and the company provided a folder of information to explain our itinerary. The bus travelled along the White Road which is very picturesque. It was one of the highlights of our 10 day tour around Japan. We were fascinated with the locality's special "Sarubobo"dolls. Brought several home to bring good wishes.

Visit around 7:30 during the Bon holiday period.
Even in the top season, only a few cars came in the early hours of the morning.
I entered from Shirakawa-go side, but it will be heavy traffic during the day as it will pass in front of Shirakawa-go parking lot to the entrance.
If you visit during the day, I think it is better to enter from the entrance on the Ishikawa side.
You can go through here, or you can do a U-turn and go back to the entrance.
If you go through it and then go back in through the entrance, you'll be charged a round-trip toll, but if you do a U-turn and go back out, you'll only have to pay a one-way toll. (This is noted at the toll gate.)
It is a toll road, but on the pass the speed limit is 20 to 30 km.
It is almost two lanes wide, although it is narrower here and there.
Highlights are everywhere, with several parking spaces.
It may be on the left or right side of the direction of travel, but the visibility is not bad and I think you can park it easily when parked on the right side.
Some waterfalls can only be seen from train windows. (You may be able to park and walk to the nearest car park)
You can easily drive around the natural scenery, but Ubagataki Waterfall will now be a 20-minute walk from the nearest parking lot.
Hot springs are boiling here and there is a footbath, but the water was not filling on the day.
The weather was cloudy, so I couldn't see the mountains beautifully.

I visited for the first time because I heard the autumn leaves were very beautiful. However, this time I was short on time, so I only went as far as the Shirakawa-go Observatory, which is located just after entering from the Gifu side (I was grateful that I could make a U-turn from there and pay the one-way fare). However, even on the way there, I was moved by the view of the mountains dyed red and yellow, and the view from the observation deck was also amazing. There were a lot of clouds this time, but it was so beautiful that I didn't mind. I'm looking forward to the next time, thinking that it would be even more amazing if the sky was blue. I heard that there are still many things to see beyond this observation deck, so it was a place I would like to come back to and pass through.

A mountain driveway that provides a shortcut from Chugoku Onsen on the Ishikawa side to Shirakawa-go on the Gifu side. It is closed in winter, so it can only be used from summer to autumn. There are several waterfalls along the road, and it is a driveway with a spectacular view of Mt. Hakusan.

Hi! Is there any way to access Shirakawa-go White road from November 1 to November 10 if I cannot rent a car? (Public buses unavailable after end of October?) Are there any other options? I would be so grateful to hear about them.
