明治１５年に建てられたと伝えられているレンガで造られた３階建ての蔵で思っていたよりは大きくはないですがとても立派な建物です。水運で栄えた当時の五木田家の繁栄がよくわかります。

昔、水海道河岸には「鬼怒川の水は尽きるとも、その富は尽くることなし」と称えられた豪商た
ちが店を連ねていたとのことです。五木田家は、代々宗右衛門を名乗り、「五木宗」と称していたとのこと。 現在 水海道市自体が常総市に合併されてしまい寂れてしまいましたが、今にその時代の栄華を残す貴重な建物です。かなり分かりづらい場所で、見過ごしてしますかも。

水海道には、かつて鬼怒川の水運で栄えた時代の遺構がいくつか残っていて、この五木宗レンガ蔵もその一つ。そう大きくもないのですが、レンガの蔵は豪華な雰囲気。
五木田家は、代々「宗右衛門」を名乗り、「五木宗」。醤油の醸造販売や廻漕業などを行っていたということです。
