Magnificent pools, but paths in need maintenance
Apr. 2021
We hiked the Crystal Pools hiking trail on 30 April 2021, the last day of the hiking season. while the pools are great I sincerely hope that the park authority uses the next few months while the hike is closed to do some much needed rehabilitation and repairs to the pathway. The path to the first three pools is fine and fairly well demarcated, but progressively becomes more eroded and in disrepair. It is a pity because the top pools with the spectacular waterfall are the best.

Crystal pools hike
Mar. 2020
Friends and myself have been going up there since the early 80's before it became popular and permits.... Still a good walk and worthwhile to dip into that "fresh" (read cold) clean water. There used to be lots of wildlife, and the occasional huge puff-adder in the path but it seems less populated by nature nowadays.

Well worth it. Best time is February.

Perfect summer day in beautiful Cape Town
Mar. 2020
We booked a month in advance and set off on our hike on the 1st of March early on a Saturday morning. What a treat, the birds and bees were out, the trail was absolutely stunning and we were spoiled with choices for crystal clear pools. The fellow hikers were friendly and we had the best day. Here and there we had to pick up a plastic bottle from an inconsiderate hiker but overall the day was perfect, the hike was pristine and the pools, amazing!

FUN FUN FUN!

Absolutely loved this hike! Would recommend it to anyone who is serious about hiking and isnt scared of a tough one. You are able to purchase same day hike permits from Pitstop lodge which is great and makes the booking process even easier.

Baboons everywhere!
Feb. 2020
We were hiking last week, baboons all over. At the first rock pool a large adult male baboon snatched my backpack with everything in it - scary!! Miraculously, it took the food and left the bag on a rock where we were able to retrieve it. Keep all valuables in pockets.
There was nobody at the gate to collect the permit, and no signage to find the gate for the hike. Very disappointing.
The rock pool is magnificent though!

Spectacular hike for experienced hikers
Jan. 2020
Absolutely stunningly beautiful nature hike! This is however, not a walk for the faint hearted and I would recommend people to be at least moderately fit before embarking on this hike. There are a lot of steep hills to climb up and down. It is approximately 2,5km to the first pool, but worth the effort to be awarded a swim in the tranquil and cool water. There are only a limited number of people per day allowed on this path.

Not a walk in the Park
Jan. 2020
The pools are wonderful and the area very picturesque but don’t be lulled into thinking this is an easy walk. There are many hidden dangers of loose rock and dangerous spree. There are a lot of signs saying rehabilitation takin place but no warning of dangerous paths. We found ourselves on very narrow ledges with very loose rocks that inexperienced hikers could find dangerous. My tip is to go as far as waterfall pool 1 as markings to return are visible. We came across a family who could not find the path home from waterfall pool no 2 and were quite panicked. A lovely hike but you need to be careful. The hike is approximately 6 km but step carefully and slowly

Absolutely the best camping experience

What an awesome place to go camping, pet friendly with ample ablution facilities. Not a glamping site...this is out there with no electricity, well worth the visit. The waterfalls are beautiful.

Beautiful day out hiking

There are limited people allowed in the nature reserve which means you get to swim in the pools without crowds of people and get to really enjoy being out in nature. Well worth the visit.

Beautiful Hidden Gem
Dec. 2018 • Friends
I love this place, you might struggle if you haven't been here yet, there are different pools, so the further you hike in the better it gets.
You can get permits at On The Go in Gordon's Bay.
