Yuki and Alex's tour was a highlight of my Japan trip. They are so knowledgeable about the local area and passionate about contributing to revitalising Okumikawa. I especially appreciated their efforts to source local produce whenever possible! The depth of their knowledge about Horaji-san was very impressive, and they worked closely with me to create a really nice itinerary- no question or request was too difficult. I would highly recommend Hihumi 1.2.3 to anyone wanting a deeper experience of Japan.

We did a half day tour with Alex and Yuko. They were very friendly and helpful in organising a custom itinerary that suited our family with a young child. We did a short hike to the Atera waterfalls, learning about the local folklore and mythology of area. Visited their house and seeing the cherry blossoms in the village (we were lucky with the timing and they were in bloom). Our daughter had fun making gohei mochi and helping start growing shitake mushrooms in logs.

The area around shinshiro has a lot to explore and do. It's much less busy than the usual tourist spots with lines and crowds. Alex and Yuko can help guide you in the area and translate if needed.

It was an awesome experience to hike in that area with friendly guides. They told us a lot about things about the culture, and nature around it. Also the view from the temple was amazing! We had a really nice lunch time with the sun! Really recommend you all to go there if you like hiking and Japanese culture.

If you are looking for an authentic, yet unique Japanese experience away from the crowds with beautiful natural scenery, rich cultural interactions and knowledgeable guides, Hihumi 1.2.3. is the company for you. From the very first email contact Yuko and Alex were exceptional in their aim to impart as much information as possible regarding the area and how to make the most of your time. They both live and work in Okumikawa and are passionate about showing its treasures to visitors.
Their very thorough itinerary included car hire, meals, accommodation in Yuyaonsen, tours to Mt Horaiji and Chiwa valley hikes, a green tea ceremony, kimono shopping, serecite soap making class, taiko drumming, information on train travel and helpful hints and tips. The entire 3 days was great value and one of the highlights of our Japan trip.
It was an easy journey almost exactly half way between Tokyo and Kyoto via Shinkasen then short car journey (there was also a cute local train option). We were a small group of 3 (a 56 year old and two 22 year old females) The area has so much history and so much to see we regret not spending more time. We could have easily spent another day just in the gorgeous village and accommodation by the river. We stayed at HooHoo guesthouse and Hazu ki. Both so lovely, with private onsens and amazing staff.
The tours were fun, informative and very flexible. For example an unscheduled stop while e-biking to Chiwa valley at a locals house who had a surprisingly famous cat - TimTim. This lovely lady, among other talents, dyed her own cloth with natural dyes from plants like indigo and mulberry, and was happy to show us her work studio.
The food experiences also rate a mention. The lunch bento boxes made by local 'grandmothers' - amazing! The dinner at Hazu ki combining chinese herbs into the 13 courses - also amazing. The bar-b-que dinner at HooHoo guesthouse - so delicious we were spoilt. The last day's lunch at Kadoya Spoon is a must-do - with a menu of meat specials like fried pork cutlet for the equivalent of AUD$16 and other options for less - in a beautiful old house. So worth it.
Yuko and Alex made our stay very personalised. We felt very welcome everywhere we visited as the locals knew them both well, and they obviously had great relationships with them.
I can highly recommend Hihumi 1.2.3. We will definitely be returning and touring with Yuko and Alex again. Great people who now feel like lifelong friends.

The tour with Yuko and Alex was the highlight of my Japanese holiday. As part of my package they organised for me to stay at a local onsen hotel in a stunning location with authentic Japanese meals. The hiking was great, the scenery was beautiful and their knowledge of the history and culture of the area is exceptional. I learnt a lot and it was the most engaging and enjoyable experience I had during my trip.

We did a number of tours with the wonderful Yuko and Alex, all of which were special and memorable. To maximise our experience and at the advice of our hosts, we hired a car from Hamamatsu to the Okumikawa area.

On our first half-day tour with our guide, we explored Mt. Horaiji, which was absolutely spectacular. Alex was a very knowledgable guide, explaining much of the geography and history as we hiked the historic steps of the mountain. If you are a nature lover, we highly recommend this tour. Though a half-day tour was a good amount of time to explore the mountain and hike to the main temple building, we recommend doing a full-day tour so that you can take your time at a leisurely pace and possibly undertake the full circuit.

In the evening, we participated in a special tour as part of 'Hanamatsuri'. This is a local festival that occurs in February (not to be confused with the larger Hanamatsuri that usually takes place in April). This was a truly memorable experience as we celebrated with the locals with warm amazake and various performances (including taiko drumming). If you find yourself in the area on a weekend in February, this is an unforgettable and special experience!

Our final half-day tour, exploring the countryside (inaka), was a beautiful way to end our time in Okumikawa. Our wonderful guides showed us some of the countryside landscape, including beautiful waterfalls along Japan's major fault line and some smaller local shrines. These were quite comfortable and leisurely walks through nature, which is a good balance compared the many steps of Mt. Horaiji. Yuko and Alex showed us the tradition of a green tea ceremony (not to be confused with a matcha ceremony) using local tea from the area, and how to make gohei-mochi over a fire.

Overall, whichever tour you decide to take with Yuko and Alex, you will certainly walk away feeling enriched by the nature of Okumikawa and the knowledge and abounding hospitality of your guides. Our only regret is that we did not spend more time in the beautiful Aichi countryside among some of Japan's most underrated landscapes and communities.

I had an unforgettable experience on this trip! The guides Alex and Yuko were so lovely, incredibly knowledgeable, providing insightful explanations about the history and culture that made the tourist spots even more captivating. The selection of places during the tour was excellent, allowing us to enjoy beautiful scenery and important landmarks without missing anything. Both guides Yuko and Alex were kind and professional, demonstrating thoughtfulness in every detail, ensuring a comfortable journey. Overall, this tour exceeded my expectations, and I look forward to participating in similar ones in the future.

A beautiful spot right on the border of Aichi and Shizuoka. The weather was perfect and both the hike up the steps and the views from the top were great. I saw a Japanese animal I hadn't seen before, the kamoshika, and learnt about how it was hunted by locals in the past for food. Our local guides were obviously very passionate about the local area and shared their in-depth knowledge of the history of the religious culture surrounding Mt Horaiji. For me personally I preferred the exercise aspect of the hike. Climbing the 1250 steps through ancient forest was a great challenge, but I felt we stopped a little too often to listen to the guide; in winter I felt it would be better to keep moving and keep warm. However, I was impressed by the level of knowledge and the passion of the guides, and I enjoyed visiting both the temple and the shrine, and learning something of the history of both, especially in relation to the Tokugawa shogunate.

I have Coeliac Disease and the tour providers went out of their way to provide an outstanding gluten free lunch (not so different from the regular bento the other tour participants received), which was sourced with local high quality produce. Eating the delicious lunch near the top of the mountain looking down on the valley below was definitely a highlight!
