Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This island is very popular due to the Mazu Temple which is located on this island. Many people will come over here to pray especially during the Mazu festival. Beside the local Chinese, the Taiwanese will come here too by boat from Taiwan island and during this festival, the Taiwanese doesn’t require any visa to visit this island. Even the locals will need to show their ID card to purchase the ticket and so do the foreigner will need to show their passport which are the requirement to this island. Without the id for locals or the passport for foreigner, you will not able to buy any ticket. If it’s during winter season, pls remember to bring a wind coat as the wind is quite strong on the island. A must to visit place when in Putian.

Went to the island for the celebration of the Goddess Matsu. It was rammed as it was also a public holiday. A massive amazing site. Fantastic temples and shrines. There's a lot steps and walking to cover the whole site. There are buses and electric carts to take you around but check the price before you ride. Great views from the island too.

It has been one of the most beautiful days I spent in Putian, China. I've been there with my girlfriend and her close relatives, and we spent there a full day among temples, caves, gardens and statues, all very well preserved. But also we relaxed on the beach and enjoyed watching fishermen come back on the land bringing various seafood. It is really one of the most vivid experience from China.

I love to understand (or at least try to) local culture and how humans deal with life and environment. This place reflects something different from common western eyes of the way of seeing things: the center of whole island is a temple to a female deity dedicated to the sea...

Visited The Meizhou Island with my family members during the June holiday, the experience i can say that it was a wonderful experience for me. Lots of things have change throughout the years. The roadside used to be filled with rubbish that is being discard by the residents and tourists, but now its clean and give me a feel of being comfortable. And for the beach it used to be a very very empty beach, but now there is activities for people to do. The place always give me this feeling that i simply can't explain with words, and this feeling always makes me want to come back to this superb island. Although things might be a little bit pricey on the island but everything is worth for that money you spend. If you are going there don't miss out the mazu blessed cake. Going to the Meizhou Island gave me a lesson on their culture knowledge and and really thankful that this place existed.

If you're staying in Putian, this is definitely worth doing. If you don't speak Chinese, then do this with a translator or guide.

Visited Meizhou on 23rd Sep 2013.

I was also there last year and I had a big surprised on how much the area surrounding the ferry terminal have changed in just 1 short year. Five foot way were constructed outside the shops and restaurants, the roads were re-paved and building given fresh coat of paint.

The island itself has transformed even more

What never change is the safety standard by the ferry operator and the ferry building management. Last year there were a lot of pushing during ferry boarding time and this year the same, last year the ferry was overloaded and this year the same, on top of that people were smoking inside the ferry terminal and also inside the ferry even when the "No Smoking" sign were everywhere

We see many cases of what happen when ferry overload. The ferry operator to Meizhou have to have better crowd control and have proper control over the number of passengers allow onboard each trip.

Upgarding the island is not enough, the ferry operator or the terminal management must also be able to manage their facility well with better crowd control so that visitors will not get themselves injured or worse case death

For the safety of everyone using the facility I hope the people involved can do something fast

Meizhou Island in Putian, Fujian Province ( 湄洲岛)is located about two hours by car from Fuzhou (福州)and another 15 minutes by ferry from the terminal. The are a couple of tourist attractions on the island including a strech of beautiful beach but the main attraction for the visitors is the Mazu Temple. According to legend, Mazu was born on Meizhou Island and she possessed special power to foresee the weather around the island. She would give warning to fishermen and other ships for bad weather as well as rescued them during the thunder storm.
With a good local tour guide, you can learn all the stories related to Mazu.

Mazu temple is one of the place you have to go when you're traveling in Fujian Putian. Mazu is a very important and historic figure in Putian's people's heart.

The Mazu Temple here is incredible. The people are very friendly and there are couple of nice beaches. Otherwise, there is very little on Meizhou. I absolutely recommend it for the temple, but that's it.
