Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We spent a fun filled ' best ever value for $20AUD' day @ Ordos Kubuqi Desert Visitor Centre Scenic Spot. Though it was the tail end of the low season (March), they brought out camels for us to ride and dusted off the slide. We also hired a jeep (extra cost) which took us further into the desert where we slid down sand dunes on toboggans, then had some free wheeling fun going up and down the sand dunes (warning : this is not for the faint hearted). It was lots of fun!!!!!

Having never visited a desert before, this was truly a unique and memorable experience for me and my 3 teenaged kids. The place is big with lots to do. You could easily spend a day here. Be warned though that the place is horribly commercialized too, with nothing much decent to eat. So bring your own snacks and drinks. Lots of great photo taking opportunities.
Wear pants, sneakers and a cool cool T-Shirt as it gets really hot here. And of course bring lots of cash!

If you want to take pictures like you can see in tripadvisor for kubuqi desert, don't go there. We took a driver and ended up at the kubuqi desert tourist area. For 300 rmb you can go in a car over the dunes without any protection for yourself and end up wih a view to several highways, where you slide go by motorcycle or camel over the crowded desert. It is not nature at all. For everybody like us who want to see nature, this is NOT the place to be.

One ticket includes all the rides, like an amusement park ($260RMB).
Cable car takes you into the desert. A modified van steers you to the main hub. You can go for the camel ride, the train ride, sand dunes slides (straight down and scary) and sand sculptures viewing.
The food is HORRIBLE in the cafeteria which is not included in the ticket. You don't have much choice in the desert. Best to bring your own box lunch and water.
The sun is strong. The sands reflect the sunlight and with the altitude, you need lot of sunscreens and hat or else you can burn easily.

We visited with a group called CET in China geared towards cultural exchanges within China. Loved riding the camels, sand surfing, riding ATVs through the desert and of course meeting new people. It is an excellent group activity and great way to meet others who are looking for adventure.

This was the Disneyland of deserts. You ride a cable car into the sand dune desert area and then take a ride on a "ship" to enter the attraction area where you can ride camels, take a zipline, ride in ATV's, ride a bike around a track, play golf, play volleyball and soccer, etc. Once you've finished there and returned via "ship" to the first area you can slide down the dune, which was fun, and then take a final cable car back to the entrance/parking area.
It was fairly busy, even on a Monday, and our guide informed us it is even busier on the weekends with long lines to do things.
We were hoping for a more "authentic" desert experience and definitely had to temper our expectations when this was what we arrived at, but if you can just enjoy what there is to do, you will probably have a good time.
Definitely bring water, sunscreen, and a hat as there is some shade, but a lot of walking outside between the different activities.

Lots of fun in an afternoon here. The ticket costs RMB340 for all rides, that includes: camel, sliding, 4 wheels bikes, transportation...
The place is good for fun, but it is too tourist driven, as you can imagine it is hot, there are food and drinks for purchase, there are plenty of washrooms at the base camp... In case you really need...
It takes around 1hour from Ordos

Gives you the experience of being in the desert (camel riding, sand sliding, jeeps, etc.), without the crowd!

We do not want to take any Tour Operator's services. Can we simply hire a taxi to go from Ordos to Kubuqi desert and back? How much time will be required and how much may we need to pay?
