As the season changes so does castle mound. The long summer grass has been cut in places and we saw two muntjac running through into the woods. A nice open space to walk.

Popular with dog-walkers this open space is a great amenity in Burwell. Paths are cut across the undulating field, and up the sides of the castle mound. Shame there is no castle :)

Worth a visit to look round and view the historical landscape. Many items marked out on visitor boards around the site.
Well worth exploring the castle mound, and walking the whole site.

If you can stroll quietly through the castle mound area when there is no one else around, there is a good chance that you'll catch sight of one of the muntjac deer that live there.

Where is the castle? asked a village visitor. Of course it was never actually finished and the small part that was built was demolished over the years. Today there is just the earth works remaining, a large mound and 'moat', which you can walk around.

Great place to walk your dog on a lead. A little stream runs through where you can paddle your feet and a great spot for your dog to drink fresh cool water.

Today only the unfinished earthworks remain of the castle. The castle building itself was started in the year 1143, but was never finished. The last remaining wall was demolished in the 1930's by the fire brigade during a hose practice. Although there is not much to see it is a nice place to wander, with plenty of space for a picnic.
The earthworks have scheduled monument status.
