This was the fortress that defended the first European colony in Africa. The view is amazing and the fortress is very well kept and restored. You can watch a video in English where you buy your ticket. Do spend time walking the ramparts and enjoy the magnificent views.

This was a beautiful experience. After visiting the Pelourinho, the Convento and the churches, we decided to stop here on the way out of Ribera Grande. Entrance fee is 500 escudos per person and includes a 15 minute introduction video. You will then be escorted to the entrance gate in the fort and you are free to walk around within... More

This is a must see if in Praia. Give yourself an hour to drive here on your way to or from the airport. As the ancient city was the first city built by Europeans in Africa, it’s worth a visit. There is an ancient fort built atop a hill overlooking the old town with an amazing view up and down... More

I've visited this place during my free time while on business trip in Praia. If you're planing a trip to Cidade Velha, you should definitely plan the visit to the fort as well. To get there take a right turn from the main road Praia - Cidade Velha just before the road starts descending towards the town. There is a... More

We arrive to Cidade Velha with a collective bus, it cost 100 CVE each, great experience with local people. Once in the main square we walk up to the cathedral ruins, you cannot see that much here. Then took a street an walk up to the Fortaleza, it's an easy walk and quick. Locals will help you if you cannot... More

Enough of the fort is still there to imagine the history of the past. They also show a video to further enhance it. With the nice views of the old town it is eady to picture the importance of the buildings and all the work that went into it. Well worth the 500 ESC:)

Historic Portuguese fort high on a hill above Cidade Velha on Santiago Island, Cape Verde. Modest entrance fee included a dated 10 minute video in Spanish, about half of which had subtitles in English. Entrance fee also included a free guided tour by a not-so-official-looking local guy. He took us around the fort and showed us the major buildings and... More

Seriously, just take the guides tour. Celestino will give you some great insight not only about the fort, but also about the old city and cv history. We were lucky to visit the fort in the afternoon when there was no one else around. Great experience and phenomenal panorama and views.

I came here during a round-the-island tour with a driver. It is a dramatically situated spot with lovely views, and the fortress itself is attractive with a unique history, but if I could make a constructive criticism, I would say that the video in English was badly translated into a kind of mixture of Spanish and English that was difficult... Well to be reached by car. The entrancefee is (comparing to the average pricing-levels of Santiago) too much! 500 escudos p.p. This is 5 times more expensive than the entrancefee of the concentration camp (historic site) close to Tarafal. The outside of the fortress gives you the feeling there is much to see insite in. No way! An empty open... More
