We just wanted to wade in the Pacific and walk on volcanic sand - we did, we enjoyed it. Lots of folks here having fun, locals and tourists. I usually see this spot on maps as Richardson Ocean Park, it's not really what most of...More
This is such a fascinating beach because it is so rocky. Yes, you can snorkle here but we were reluctant because we don't know the currents and the place was just vacant of people. We were there early in the morning. but the scenery is...More
Richardson ocean park is an iconic place in Hilo. You'll find a black sand beach (not as black as the other black sand beach tough) and if you're lucky a lot of hawaiian sea turtles. Please respect the Honu, do not bother them and stay...More
Just a few miles west of downtown is this spacious ocean park - with several coves, rocky promontories and grassy park grounds to have a picnic, wade in the water or climb around on the rocks. There are also some small tidepools, perfect for kids...More

This was a lovely area--very tropical looking. The waves were quite rough on this day, but it added to the beauty. Nice area to spend some time viewing the scenery. The black sand was a drawing point for our visit.
The Park is very well kept. Plenty of room for showering. Picnic grounds are safe, close to local citizens who use the them for all kinds of activities. Very pleased with the quality of services. Rental options too. Parking is free. We really enjoyed our...More
I enjoyed a SCUBA dive right from the shore at Richardson Beach Park. It's not too crowded, and seems to be mostly used by locals, which is nice! Parking was not a problem at all. The water can get a little rough when you get...More
This is a nice park with showers and facilities and picnic tables. The beach is not huge, but a neat area to snorkel and explore. The volcanic rock provides an environment for tropical fish and turtles to hang out making snorkeling fun without having to...More

Not far and yes but they are about 45-60 minutes away by car. Kaimu has one you can hike to but it's no good for swimming, although it does have a bar and food and if you go Wednesday nights there is a big market and live music. If you want to hang out on a beach and swim, Kehena is a large beach great for swimming but I do recommend swim shoes of some sort and you may see some naked hippies. Both beaches are in the same area Kaimu is right by Kalapana and Kehena is along the ocean heading to Seaview from Kaimu. Aloha!
