We visited Santorini and Fira on a cruise. We took a ship excursion which took us by bus up to Fira rather than by cable car. The views are stunning!

Spend a day in santorini. Beautiful place but in general too crowded.
Good for local tourism but it does spoils the island.
Shops repeating themselves and very expensive. Same with food and drink.
Nice for the pictures probably not for a long holiday.

We had the taxi driver take us to the church so we could photograph the blue dome. There is an outlook above which lets you look down on it and photograph the Caldera in the background. You cannot go inside.
The "must see" tourist spot is just opposite to Santorini Palace Hotel. The views around are stunning, particularly during sunset period. The blue dome together with the "three bells" behind are photo-takers target. Highly recommended.
After awhile in Santorini the spectacular views become common place, but this view really is special. We loved Fira for it’s vibrancy and energy. It is also nice to hop on a local bus in Fira and see the rest of the island quite inexpensively....More
