We enjoyed this monastery which is part of a complex of monasteries that are viewed by most as the birthplace of Georgian Christianity, dispite being prevented by two sets of friendly Georgian border guards from climbing further up the mountain beyond the natural spring to...More

We drove out to the site from Tbilisi in a 4x4 hire car, which was very helpful on some very bad bits of road (mainly after you take the turn off from Sagarejo - note however that this is the best way to get there...More

When we visited here, the border was closed and we saw some Georgian soldiers watching the border. The atmosphere was not tense as those soldiers were doing smart phones. You can visit only one ruined monastery. So it’s totally up to you to visit here...More

The first thing to note is that the border guards are stopping access at this time to most of the caves and the ridgeline (we were warned this by the bus operator in Tbilisi). The lavra monastery (the one that normally appears on google images)...More

We took the Gareji Line bus from Tbilisi as recommended in Lonely Planet. It took 3 hours to get there. Within 5 minutes of arrival it became apparent that all except one of the monasteries are closed. The 2 paths up to the border and...More

This tour should be avoided while the Azerbaijan border is closed. It’s a long and uncomfortable trip in the Gareji Line minibus. They DID NOT explain to any of the 20+ tourists who purchased tickets at the start of the day that the Udabno Monastery...More

The lower Lavri Monastery is interesting but unless you are willing and able to make the hike up to the Udabno Monastery to see the wondrous cave paintings, it is not worth the long and rough drive to get there. Especially if you've been able...More

We took the Gareji line which was a cheap way to get to there (30 gel pp/£8). You meet at Pushkin's statue and a minibus drives you back and forth. The staff were super friendly I would not advise driving yourself as you are likely...More

Requires a good bit of hiking up a steep hill to get to, and then some scrambling up fairly rough trails to get to places off the main path, but worth the effort. Once you crest the hill and walk down to the path along...More

The Lavra monastery is very interesting and worthwhile in itself. However for those who are fit and up for a hike and a bit of adventure, hiking up to the Udabno cave monastery is fun. When looking at the Lavra monastery go to the right...More

Hi! Have not been on the Gareji Lines - but if you are concerned about the hiking trail - don't be. It is a well trodden path - just follow it to Udabno and return in a circle through the downward path from Udabno. Yes, the... More
