We arrived about 30 minutes before close. We would have had to pay full price. Restaurant was already closed and you could pretty much see the canal and goings on from the upper parking lot for free. Traffic was bad getting here.
The museum is very small, but we had a great view of the Mira Flores locks and commentary on what was happening. I would recommend doing the cruise instead as the visitors' center may be pricey for a family.
IMAX movie on the canal was great. Kept my kids interested. Also learned many things I did not on canal. Try to see before walking over to Canal museum. New facility, snack bar, coffee, popcorn for movie! There is also a restaurant inside museum area....More
The best part of this is how close to the city these locks are. You can easily get there via public transportation as many have noted. Or a really cheap Uber ride, which many have also noted. They do have notes placed at the ticket...More
It was about 1965 when I first set eyes on the Panama canal from the deck of an oil tanker, this month i viewed it as a visitor to Panama. Without doubt a must to visit , exceptionally interesting and informative for young and old...More
The Museum is a must see - a lot of very interesting information that is easy to digest. Kinda wish we would have had enough time to watch the Imax film too. Only disappointing item was the amount of people on the top floor to...More
The museum tells the complete story of the building of the Canal & is located on 3 different floors. Fascinating to learn of the blood, sweat & tears that went into the building of this wonder of the world.

I find your question a little confusing ??do you want to go to the visitors center and see the Mira Flores locks and also experience the ride thru the locks and canal. I was only there once but we used the hop on /off bus($34 for one day/$37 for two days) to see most of panama city. You can check their routing and see if it suits you)The Maria Flores has a small museum($) and a grandstand to view ships going thru the Locks. I (and my wife)found the old city very interesting using the self walking guide. Taxi's are very reasonable and everyone uses American $$.
