Main plaza in Montevideo with the huge statue at its heart. There never seemed to be anything happening here unlike plazas in other cities . No stalls, street entertainers no real buzz. Still impressive for the sheer scale all the same. We used it as...More

This is a very busy area, but one which should be on all tourists list of must do locations in Montevideo. The number 62bus goes there from The Rambler, so find a bus stop and enjoy the journey to this location. The square is best...More

The square is rather spoilt by a large mix of 1070/80's glass and concrete structures, overcrowding the national historic buildings. There are however a number of lovely unspoilt and quiet tree lined squares within the old city, only a 5-10 minute walk.

Architecture abounds around the square with a mounted General Artigas in the center. Probably a good place to people watch on a nice day.

Just walking around downtown on a sunny afternoon. The plaza is full of people just sitting and talking, and a group of school kids listening to a teacher. If you want, you can descend to Artigas' maesoleum for a touch of history.

If you are in the city of Montevideo, this is the main place for you to be. This plaza is the heart and soul of the city.
