Like everything else, the exterior is under construction BUT go anyway. The mosaics on the interior are exquisite and really worth visiting. You can breeze through if you are short on time, but to truly appreciate the place plan on spending at least half an...More

Small busy, but beautiful place. Get a good guide to understand the story of the mosaics. Beautiful gilding, tiny tesserae, all over one’s head.

It may be out of the way but worth the trip to see one of the finest example of a Byzantine Church in the country

An excellent example of Byzantine churches. Later converted, and now a museum. Unfortunately ruined by Catholic crusaders in the 12th century religion wars between the 2 churches. Still there a lot to see.

I trekked over to this site on my last day and it was completely worth it. The building is going through renovations, but the two galleries with mosaics and the central nave (?) remain open. Give yourself time to just look at the details on...More

We walked for miles after getting the ferry here, dodging traffic and rubble strewn pavements on an up hill climb to get here. I have a walking stick and almost fell on arrival due to the reception shouting at me to get a ticket. All...More

This one is totally underrated. May be it is a bit out of the main tourist area. We had to hire a cab to take us there. Even though it was a bit inconvenience because it was under reconstruction, but I was totally blown away...More

The outside of the church is swathed in protective mesh over scaffolding, the photo shows the best view you can get at present. Inside only the nave and part of the inner narthex can be seen, other areas are blocked off. The mosaic of Theodore...More

This is one of the rare churches which tells the story of Christianity beginning from the birth of Virgin Mary. You must have a guide to fully understand the frescos.

I stopped here with low expectations and was blown away. It’s disappointing that some of the mosaics are damaged but what I saw was amazing. I’ve been to a lot of churches and religious structures and this is one of the most impressive that I’ve...More

This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of

the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and
some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art
in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to
witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving
ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene
shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid
