- VickiLondon, United Kingdom571 contributionsInteresting Medieval Castle!Beautiful Castle located in the city centre. You need to take the glass Funicular in order to access the castle. The grounds around the place are vast and you can see a stunning view of the city from the top. There are many medieval artefacts on display. In the Castle, which is used as a museum now. There is a souvenir shop on site and you can pay to go up the tower if you want. Highly Recommended!Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 8 May 2023
- JJJC_Family810 contributionsAnother castle of meritI’m a castle guy. So it’s not hard to please me. Nonetheless, this is a very good castle to visit. Why? The funicular ride gives you good views. When you get up in the castle, you get various great views of the city and surrounding area. They have a nice central area where they have a cafe and restaurant. The Slovenian History museum was more interesting than I thought and gave a lot of insight despite being pretty small. I originally had no interest, but said “What the heck.” It was definitely worth the relatively short time we were there. The Puppet Museum is almost the same as the Slovenian History, except that originally I thought it might be cute and then I decided we would not bother. And then as we decide to leave we were right by the elevator to go up to the museum and again I said “What the heck.”. It was also worthwhile. In fact, it was a bit of a hoot. A number of truly imaginative and let’s be real, weird puppets stood out. I have to admit we have seen several puppet museums in the past and we tend to visit them when we have the time. The best are lots of fun. This one was fun and the advantage of this being small is that it was a quick run through even though I went through twice. So what’s the verdict? Go. I believe you will find it rewarding.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 July 2023
- Explore207226London, United Kingdom29 contributionsLovely views on Castle HillWe decided to walk up to the castle and spend some time in the grounds. There are plenty of view points at the top and benches to sit and relax. We also went to a viewing point inside the castle grounds which was free to access. You can also spend time at the cafe which is at the top and can be accessedVisited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 5 August 2023
- Phil WAspley Guise, United Kingdom187 contributionsWell worth a visitAfter reading reviews we decided to only buy the funicular ticket to get to the castle. Very cheap. Not convinced the cost of the other parts of the castle are worth it. Great views and a lovely walk back down.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 August 2023
- Edmond LSingapore, Singapore342 contributionsEscape Castle!Came here with my wife and 7 year old. We did the escape castle activity and it was amazing. You are given a set of instructions to run/walk around the castle finding clues to solve the mystery. Great activity for kids. Some of the puzzles can be quite challenging. We managed to crack it at the end. But it definitely took longer than expected.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 August 2023
- I WLeicestershire, United Kingdom290 contributionsGreat viewsA lot of the castle is free. We arrived mid afternoon on a wednesday, had a meal and then headed up to the castle as the sun was setting. Fantastic views, and a lot of it was free and really interesting. We saw so much that we didn't feel that we needed to return the following day.Visited July 2023Written 19 August 2023
- Jason SMelbourne, Australia1,693 contributionsOk at best but nice viewsCompared to so many castles in Europe this would come across as average at best. Main part of fort/castle is free and that is just so so would go out of my way to see, if you add the views overlooking Ljubljana into equation then mane worth the visit. I would say if you are in Ljubljana for more than a few days then go and see and explore, if only a day or two then give it a miss, not a must see or do attraction.Visited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 24 August 2023
- elpndjLakeway, Texas199 contributionsCastle Serves as an Entertainment VenueThe castle in Ljubljana is a beautiful jewel in the crown of a lovely city, but don’t expect a tone of history when visiting the castle. The city seems to have turned it into a venue rather than a historical attraction. That said, it offers beautiful views of the city, outstanding restaurants and hosts various events. We enjoyed dinner there and took in a show at the jazz club that is part of the castle complex. The jazz club was very cool, and we thoroughly enjoyed a tribute to Bob Dylan.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 September 2023
- SnowyShastaPortland, Oregon2,151 contributionsScenic castle overlooking the cityWe visited the castle courtyard as the ending point of our tour of the city, followed by some time looking around on our own. We accessed the castle via the funicular, which was a quick ride but required a wait in line of about half an hour on a Saturday afternoon (no line for the ride back down). You can also access the castle via a hiking trail. Our favorite part of the castle was the tower, which you can climb via a set of wide spiral stairs, which has nice views over the castle courtyard below as well as out over Ljubljana and the river. All of this was accessible for free; we didn't pay extra for admission to the castle museum.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 September 2023
- Jo PBrough, United Kingdom435 contributionsModern Castle with City ViewsA modern rebuild of a castle. You can actually walk around most of the ground floor for free but need to pay to access some of the castle and tower. The tower has great views over the whole city. Amazing castle. For those who are a bit afraid of heights (as me) and was naive enough to think you would be ok - take the bus up and down. Do not walk or take the funicular as the edges can be very steep 🤭

Visiting Ljubljana Castle is a must during your Slovenian adventures, even if it might not boast the grandeur of some other castles in the region. The castle's museums offer intriguing insights into local history, and the panoramic views from the top are truly breathtaking. Opting for the funicular ride is the easiest way to ascend the hill, and tickets can be conveniently purchased alongside entry tickets at the kiosk. Don't miss adding the tower to your ticket for unparalleled vistas of the city and the surrounding mountains.

Great thing to see. Not mind blowing but good to see. Wouldn't bother if it was raining. Lovely cafe too. Read a review about walking up and down and decided to take the cable car too

Amazing castle, with great view over the city. Not as big as the one in Prague for example. You can buy a ticket just for the funicular to take you up, around 3€, but to enter all rooms, you need the one for 12€. Easy to walk down, short distance with lovely views.

The castle is a great place to see over the whole of the city and on a clear day you can see for miles.
We did not take the tour of the castle which is 10 euros per person as several people we met said it wasn't worth it.
That said there are plenty of parts of the castle you can explore for free, you can also climb the spiral staircase and walk along the battlements - great photo opportunities.
There are restaurants in the courtyard which are very nice.
If your driving you can park right next to the castle entrance.
Plenty of history and interesting things to which you can spend as long or little as you like looking at.
Great gift shop on site with plenty of interesting items if a little expensive.

AVOID AVOID AVOID
BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE!!!!
Visited today and purchased a one way ticket thinking that two relatively fit people could walk down after !
NOT - the whole way down was scary, dangerous and like an ice rink
First I fell, hit my head and ripped my coat and then my husband fell and hurt his back and leg (see pic)
NO ONE advised when we purchased a one way ticket that we would not be able to SAFELY walk down.
It took 35 minutes of falling, sliding, crying (yes it was that scary) and the worst part was you couldn’t get back up as it was even more dangerous than going down !
Actually the worst thing was when I went to ask the staff to warn others of the danger and absolute risk of falling hurting yourself SERIOUSLY - was the way it was handled.
Staff laughing, saying the walkway is not their responsibilty and generally not caring at all what we had just gone through.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL !!

Castle looks very nice for sure in the distance on the hill in Ljubljana. The ride with the "tram" into the Castle is a nice gimmick.
The Castle itself was nice but nothing special. Several weddings were happening within the walls, the focus seems to be on restaurants and bars and not so much on the Castle. So it felt somewhat Tourist Trappy and non-authentic. There is however a very nice Michelin starred restaurant. With the audio tour they did have some focus on historic information

It is more of a touristic rather than historical location. But there are great views. It is a must go when at Ljubljana…

Have been up to the top before but a long time ago as you only paid for the ride up on the funicular but now you have to pay an entrance fee to get in to most of the rooms & the upper viewing points which was not the case on a previous visit. You still get great views of the beautiful old town of Ljubljana, river and beyond down below.

Grazie.
