Maybe just unfortunate timing but we caught some really windy and wet weather in the couple of days we were in Hokitika. This made the beach nearly unapproachable. There had been plenty of weather and the beach seemed to have copped a lot of that....More

It would be amazing to come here for the Driftwood and Sand Festival. The character and sheer amount of driftwood around the beach here is amazing! You could spend hours and hours scouring the beach for treasures of driftwood or rocks.

Rocky “beach” both large and small rocks - looks like some rocks added to stop beach loss The name of the town in the sticks is cute Actually, other than shopping and eating- this is one of few things to do here

This was everything I wanted from a West Coast Beach- stones, driftwood, wild and windy. Loved the driftwood Hokitika sign. Wrap up warm if you don't want to freeze!

Interesting shore line to visit. Do not swim as a strong rip. Lots of locals white bait fish from Sept. wild, rough and ruggered. Great sunset 🌅 pics.

One of the great beach walks in NZ. Right alongside the town and the sunsets are stunning. Out to sea nothing to interfere with the view.

There is really not much to see. Gravel from behind the shops to the rock breakwall and then a blackish sandy beach. Oh, drift wood, lots of drift wood. Don't forget to get a photo of the Hokitika drift wood sign.' Still, pretty cool to...More

Certainly worth having a look, and in better weather I would have loved walking on the beach and exploring a bit more. It was not to be however, blowing a gale and torrential August rain made this very uninviting. Dark stony sand and awesome drift...More

I love the wild black sand beaches of the west coast. The council is doing great work protecting the coast line and making a lovely walk too. You can go for miles, buy an hour each was enough to blow the cobwebs away and set...More
