Lasted visited here in 1983, there have been many improvements. Great to learn about NZ history in this part of NZ. Basically NZ tourism started here with overseas visitors coming to see the Pink & White Terraces, which were unfortunately buried in the June 1886 eruption of Mt

The 1886 eruption of Tarawera is a fascinating part of New Zealand and local history. Our museum tells the story of early tourism, the day trips to the Pink and White Terraces on Lake Rotomahana, and how it ended with the eruption of Tarawera. Thank you for your visit and lovely review, we do appreciate it!

We found this a very interesting spot to visit. The staff were lovely and we finished off with a very nice morning tea in the cafe. On paying we got the audio guide (swaping our car keys) and a map. We had our own earphones to use as the sound without earphones is quite low.

We are sorry to hear that your visit to the Buried Village didn't meet your expectations. Many of the excavated objects from the house sites have been moved to the museum for safekeeping. The village of Te Wairoa was buried by 1 1/2 metres of mud in the Tarawera eruption in 1886 which is visible in the excavations. We hope you had a chance to get the views down the Waitoharuru Valley from our lookout point and to see the beautiful Te Wairoa falls.

The Whare Taonga is fantastic. Full explanation before you do the self walk around the village. Walk is very well done and a lot of work has gone into it. Beautiful scenery along the stream and waterfall. Spotted trout in the stream. Loved the letters from Margaret on the walk.
